A stupid possum ran in front of my 2010 prius going about 30mph on the outskirts of town at 2 am.
At first I thought nothing of it since the car seemed unaffected but decided I better look.

On the right front I sustained about a 3 inch crack on the bumper but worst of all some line was spewing "in a mist" what seemed like freon or something similar... It wasn't hot or cold especially but was nasty to breathe.

At first I figured it must be the air conditioning line but then wondered what else it may be?

It's Christmas so I can't have it checked and don't know if it's okay to drive.

I did drive another 35 miles or so to get home without events... No warning lights etc, nothing is pouring out and all my fluids under the hood seem perfect.

Could it be inverter cooling? Transmission?

In this picture I think it's the "top" line going into the radiator in this picture. "located lower left radiator as your facing it"

Sounds like the air conditioning. The hoses are located in the front.
    Here's a view on the 2010.

Since you drove it home I am guessing it was not the brake lines that got ruptured.

The inverter cooling fluid is the pink radiator stuff. I just bought some so I confirmed with the Toyota parts dept. it's the same as radiator fluid.

If it was misting it was high pressure so likely the AC system.

Thanks... The makes sense... There is residual fluid on the grill... Maybe 5 tablespoons worth.
Think I'll not run the air to test.. Right now it's in the 30s outside so no need....

Thanks for you guys input... I found another blowup, it labeled it the condenser pipe.

Just didn't want to hurt that inverter!

Lol!.... I didn't go look, but that was one big possum! I would have thought it was a coyote but had its nose to the ground with those little bitty short feet moving really quick.....

Bummer thing about working so much at night. You never know... By the time I got a glimpse of this one i already hit it.

I should a jumped out and finished him off for running out in front of my car without signaling first! No headlights either....

I hit a coyote last year, does anyone know if the prius store carries heavy duty cattle catchers for the prius?

Get it fixed real soon, it's not good to have the AC open to the atmosphere. The moisture it picks up from the atmosphere and that can cause problems. The residual fluid might be AC lube which is in with the freon or it might be possum juice.

Had toyota look at it today.
What I thought was a radiator was actually the air conditioner condenser behind the grate.
My fear of turning the ac button on was unfounded as it simply wouldn't have turned the compressor on if the fluid is out or too low.

Labor is about $250.00 plus 7-800 for the condenser unless I use an aftermarket or used.

My bumper also has minor damage so ill be submitting it all to insurance.

They consider it can act of God do its not held against me other than to show the event actually happened.

I told them I didn't think God had anything to do with it unless you want to blame him for not giving them enough sense to not run out in front of a car!

Wow, I insurance pays the third price... Only came up to $521.00 in total parts including a new bumper.

This sad how the customer paying out of pocket gets cheated.

I see this in medical too.... I guess what the market will bear is determined by what you know.

Do your insurers still have acts of God. Here in the UK and Eu countries insurers were stopped from using such clauses some years ago, as in theory it gave them the right to refuse to pay out on almost any claim sighting an act of God as the cause.

    Gets philosophical doesn't it?
Acts of nature, wind etc are all acts the driver has no control over and so can't be held responsible.

Comprehensive coverage is usually such acts too .... Fire, hail etc

Sounds like a lawyer perverted the meaning as usual rather than the reverse as they are supposed to do.
