I love my car but... bladder tank problem

If it disturbs you so much, why not have a new tank fitted at your friendly local Toyota dealer? My 2008 had a new tank fitted in 2014 (by a previous owner) and I can go 20-25 days between fill ups.

 

If you do decide to buy a new tank, it will run you $450-550 for parts (discounted) plus labor.

 

Step 1) Get gas in the heat of the day, the bladder will be most flexible
Step 2) Open the filler cap before anything else at the gas station, give the pressure time to equalize.
Step 3) Try an inverted nozzle, sometimes upside down allows better air flow
Step 4) Sometimes slower nozzle speed equal bigger fill ups.

 

While European models don't have these bladders in the tanks, I have to ask:
Is that bladder mandatory in every/your state? Or can it simply be removed?

 

Is it a bladderless tank? Or with bladder, but being new it works better?

I have no idea if it has a bladder, but I assume so.

 

My old Camry had a problem filling that turned out to be a clogged charcoal filter for the emissions stuff. Not sure if Prius has or needs that, but I suspect it does.

Edit to add, the shop told me that that happens when you top it off too much and/or too often.

 

There is a fuel inclination calibration you can do for that model as well. Yes when weather changes and gets extremely cold it will at the worst only take a couple gallons but there have been times where the gauge is off due to it getting calibration out of whack. Let me know if you want to try it out.

 

it is not mandatory, but part of toyota's design. it cannot be removed. it was simply poor engineering to meet emissions that they corrected in 2010.

We have the same bladder problem, but I am not sure it is bladder problem.
Had a good fill-up last week to 8.3-gals by pumping real
s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-l-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-w-w-w-w-w-w-w

I've had no luck at all pumping just slow, but super duper slow, just drips, may work.
This means a time commitment at the pump.

@dolj has said this so maybe that works, but also seems better in summer here anyways so will do more testing

 

think of it like an ev. put it on drip mode, and go have dinner or do some shopping.

 

I actually think the bladder issue is worse with 2006 models

It's a one time fix, just a PITA. My 06 did the same thing many years ago, was only able to get 3-4 gallons in at a time. Instead of going super slow and all that, I just filled up 3 times a day. Took a few days, but it popped right back out and hasn't been an issue since. Filled it up until shut off, went away. Came back at lunch, filled up a bit more, went away. Came back after work and filled up a bit more, went away.
