I tell you, check your tire pressure

I'm using 37/35 psi and averaging 52 mpg. I tried the tires at 42/40 but didn't like the rough ride or the handling characteristics at that pressure. Although I gave the higher pressure a chance and maintained it for a couple of tanks, I really didn't see a significant change in mileage.

I can't agree with this one. I drive mostly freeway in Phoenix with my AC set to 75 or 80, depending on comfort, and I am averaging 50-55 mpg with the tires inflated to whatever they were when I bought the car new -- I never even checked. My AC is on all the time, and the last couple of weeks the outside air temp has been over 105°F -- this week it's been over 110°F. Still am getting over 50 mpg.

I think folks are experiencing variation in mileage due to other factors beyond their control and end up attributing the differences to something they did. I don't think this is the case.

That's weird. I use my AC 99% of the time on Auto set to 72-74 degrees and I average 47 mpg per tank. I refuse to give up comfort to save a little gas with my Prius.
