    7" is quite a bit, even if you include the shifter (which is, ~4-5"?)

    I won't try to defend the buttress. Rest assured that if sales decline enough because of it, it'll get redesigned. But right now, it's there, so if it bothers you, buy something else. There is no point in arguing about. The ability to move to the passenger side has never been a consideration for me when buying a car. The last time I moved to the other side without getting out of the car was when we had a bench front seat, and that was before 1970. :)
