The American Petroleum Institute’s EOLCS directory lists several engine oils of SAE 0W-20 grade sold under the Idemitsu brand that meet the ILSAC specification required by Toyota (explained in my previous posting).

The Owner’s Manual (PDF, in Hebrew) for the 2012 Prius says that oil meeting the API Service Categories “SL” or “SM” should be used. These have been replaced by “SN,” and as API writes, “For automotive gasoline engines, the latest API Service Category includes the performance properties of each earlier category and can be used to service older engines where earlier category oils were recommended.”

I don’t think any oil can guarantee durability beyond an engine’s design life, but regular changes with an oil having the required characteristics will help avoid premature failure.

Idemitsu is good oil and the 0w-20 is in my 2014 as we speak. The Zepro Eco Medalist and Advanced Moly Eco Medalist are fine 0w-20s, too. Given your climate and high-ish mileage, I'd seriously consider their 5w-30s or one of the other brand's 0w-40s.

I really like that last sentence. Get something that meets the spec, is readily available, not too expensive, and change it regularly.

    Thank u!
The question is that first owner was using 10w40 liqui moly mos2, I also used idemitsu 0w20 on my honda insight 2010, was great, I used it also summer time and was realy good, but in israel 0w20 is not so popular, people just don't know about this oil, I bought it on ebay. i just changed oil on my prius, lets see what could be, liqui moly 10w40 after 10k kilometers was in good condition. In god we trust not in oil :)
    Thank u !!!

Just noticed Israel. Maybe 0W20 is too thin for the climate? In your shoes I might try 5W30, that was the second spec, for North America, year 'round.

Now it's ok, weather is getting cold, in summer time I tried on honda insight, was good, and honda petrol engine is more weak and works more. U r right also Toyota dealler recomend 5w30 or 10w30, but u know anyway I ant to try!

Mendel, can you say where you saw that information about the use of 5W-30 for North America? Thanks. That is my oil of choice.

Shalom to our friend in Israel. :)

It's the 2nd gen Prius spec oil, shows in the North American Owner's Manual.

I was cleaning out my garage yesterday and found some 5W-30 that I still had for my gen2 Prius. I think I will use it.

We are going into the 80s again later this week. And it will probably be in the 80s on Christmas day. I'm going to continue to use the 5W–30.

Maybe it's all my imagination, but my Prius sure seems to run a little quieter and smoother -- for the last 2000 miles since I switched oil.

(Now I just need quieter tires, and better Wiper blades that don't split after only three months!)
