Actually, every human being has moral convictions. It's one of the universal characteristics of humanity.

The problem is that some people fail to acknowledge the cultural differences between different social and national groups, and believe deeply that their own moral code is the only legitimate one. This view is known as moral absolutism, and is common among fundamentalist religions.

Since America was founded upon the ideal of religious freedom, it is un-American to insist that your own moral code is the only legitimate one, and/or to try to supress other moral systems, as different religious traditions have different moral codes. Some moral assertions tend to be shared by many or all traditions, but sexual prudishness is a moral value that many religious traditions do not share.
