Radically New Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology to Transform Aviation, Backed by USAF - autoevolution

"This innovative fuel cell system was proven to deliver up to 2,000 watts per kilogram of specific power (three times more than liquid-cooled hydrogen), and an energy density of up to 1,500 watt-hours per kilogram, for a major increase in range."

That's about the same power density (specific power) as the best high-energy batteries and at least 6 times the energy density (specific energy). Very impressive if true.

I skimmed their white paper: HyPoint - we make zero emission air transport possible

I had always felt that the high temperature, +600 C, carbonate fuel cells were the way to go. Here, they've taken an approach to 160 C which is much more reasonable than the cooler or hotter fuel cells. Regardless, there is a big gap between lab and production products. But unlike some other proposals, it 's*cks less.'

Good luck! I would have to sell some of my Nikola stock to invest (I have no Nikola stock.)

I was excited about the rail gun. Now I'm a little more hesitant to be optimistic. (I wish to work on a time dilation missile personally). Is DARPA working on this???

I'm a history buff and for some great binge watching, "Inventions that Shook the World" is very well produced!!

jzchen: I can neither confirm nor deny that DARPMA may or may not be working on this.... (Yes, I had to memorized that statement when I was a Special Agent)

Aren't we all still waiting for flying cars & jet packs to become ubiquitous?

As seen in this real life clip from the 1960s, inexpensive flying cars need cliffs to take off. That isn't practical for mass market ;-)

You don't need a cliff if you use Flubber.
