sitting in the waiting area, bernardi in framingham, ma, where i purchased. no donuts.:( free wifi, so that's something anyway.
17,500 miles, guy is telling me my tires are feathering, need a 4 wheel alignment. not. adversarial relationship right off the bat.
didn't want to give me the free oil change, because i'm not at 20,000. toyota has sent me 2 notices that my free service runs out 04/26, and your not going to change my oil? we'll do the tire rotation and check everything. no thanks, give me the keys, i'm leaving. hold on, let me check with my manager. okay, we'll do the oil change, never had this happen before.
then i ask him not to overfill the oil. we have to put in what the spec says. but last time, it was half an inch over the full line. really? never seen that happen before. anyhow, half an inch isn't much oil, it won't hurt the engine. arghhh, looks like i'll be siphoning again. why do i torture myself?

In my experience, good dealers are far and few between. :(

My last (which was my first with the Prius) Oil change, I had to siphon. Almost a full quart over. You'd think these Toyota dealerships would have a real lock on how much oil to put in a Prius, but evidently a lot of them don't.

Next time? New Dealership...and I'm asking (politely)...warning...(politely) but NOT siphoning myself. If they screw it up, I'm taking it back until they get it right.

To me there is no excuse for a Toyota Service Center not being able to put the right amount of oil in a Toyota Prius. And that amount is NOT over the fill line, and that's according to the Toyota Owners manual itself.

good point. the problem is, i have a hard time reading the dipstick, so my argument proxy won't fly in court. it's bad enough the dealer's are clueless, why can't toyota put the right spec in the o/m? they specifically state 'oil change, with and without filter.'

By the way, I've never heard the term 'Feathering" applied to tires.

What are they saying that is suppose to mean?

Maybe you just ran over a bird?

...sorry, I didn't read your first post. "Feathering" to me, roils indicate wear which might be caused by bad alignment out worn ball-joint or tie-rod end. hope this helps...

he ran his fingers over the outside edge of the tread, forward and backward. said it was smooth one way, and rough the other. you could see his fingers bounce. nothing visual. seems to me, if it needs alignment at 17,500 miles, it should be under warranty. the tipoff though, was when i called for the appointment, the lady suggested that a 2 year old car was due for a 4 wheel alignment.

I'm with you man, dealers are horrid. Dealership's lack of competency is unwittingly driving people to the loving/waiting arms of Tesla.

Wheel alignment and balance are covered for the first 12 months or 20K miles, whichever comes first. Source- 2012 Warranty & Maintenance Guide, page 13.
Bisco, we're the tires rotated at the suggested 5K intervals?

the work order says 5 quarts. nothing would surprise me. $85. if it wasn't free. 2 1/2 hours including travel, and another hour or two to siphon it out. it would have been cheaper to take it to my local guy. it will be interesting to see how much he gets for a synthetic change. but that won't be until next april.

Common sense would tell you that whatever is causing the feathering, if it is an alignment issue, is probably either front or rear axle, and the dealer's service people should have spotted it when the rotation was done, or at the 10K oil service if that was done separately. Even if all four wheels are out of alignment, some of that feathering should have been evident at the time of the rotation. But that was in the first year, right? :(

How often did you have the tires rotated ? Only with the 10K oil change ??

Tires need to be rotated regularly.....AND the alignment needs to be checked periodically.
I don't think every 20K miles is an unreasonable recommendation.

The condition that he demonstrated to you probably DOES indicate abnormal wear.

(Disclaimer: some specific tire models inherently wear "funny". I once had a set of Firestones that wore the SECOND outside tread the most. It looked really funny. Back then the "tire guys" knew the truth and told you.)

...and don't forget that tyre pressures are important! (I run ChuggyPig with 42F and 40 rear (lots of threads re. pressures here if you care to look...)
