Here is the story of one of the extraordinary people who flew a SR-71. This story has some links to other stories

SR-71 Blackbird pilot Brian Shul: My life at Mach 3.5 (newatlas.com)

Through a set of circumstances, I found myself on a military mobility exercises in a foreign country and actually got to see the pilots/astronauts board the SR-71 and see its lift off. I will never forget it.

7 Wild Photos Of The SR-71 Blackbird's Legendary Afterburners In Action - Task & Purpose (taskandpurpose.com)

"More than 4,000 missiles were shot at Blackbirds during its 24-year career, but the aircraft was so fast they simply accelerated away."

Brian is quite a gifted motivational speaker with a remarkable story of being shot down in the Nam, suffering crippling and near fatal burns and somehow avoiding capture....for over 24 hours.....to rescue, a long and heroic recovery, and being returned to full flight status................as a Sled (SR-71) driver during some of the hottest parts of the Cold War.

I've always thought the SR-71 was the coolest-looking thing in the sky. It was an amazing piece of design and engineering.

Interesting, though, seeing these posts about how the SR-71 was brilliant and its pilots were "extraordinary people", after saying that what China is apparently doing is terrible. It's almost like there's a double standard there. But I'm sure there isn't.

They didn't ask for a recovery.

I'm not sure it's a classic double standard though.

I think anyone can admire aeronautical achievement wherever it is made and still root for their home team.

In the Hollywood version of this Shakespearian tragedy, a rogue Chinese general with an axe to grind steered this balloon on a provocative course. Eventually the Premiers' administration was forced to claim it was official state action to maintain the appearance of unified control.

Then a rogue US Air force officer commands his pilots to shoot down the balloon, forcing the American president to claim that he deliberately ordered its destruction to hide the fact that he also had a loose cannon.

    Look for it off-off-off-off-Broadway

As long as, at some point, the day is saved by a rogue US Air Force pilot who seeks the truth, and absolutely as long as said pilot at some point rides a motorbike without a helmet, I'm in.

Ooh there's the intrigue. he's the pilot who was ordered to shoot down the balloon, but he is subsequently struck by lightning while being bitten by a radioactive cobra and develops a superpower moral compass. Now he must find a way to save the world without letting his criminal boss know he's a DOUBLE-ROGUE! (MX: GUITAR STING)

I would take a hard pass on fake Hollywood heroes - my preference is for real life heroes.

    People like:

Admiral William H. McRaven - In his thirty-seven years as a Navy Seal, he commanded at every level. Rose to the rank of Four Star Admiral. All this after nearly dying in a failed military parachute jump. Autor of "Make Your Bed"

Major Brian Shul -a fighter pilot shot down and covered with burns over 50% of his body - required over fifteen major surgeries and after overcoming this regained his flight status and became a certified astronaut/pilot in the SR-71 program.

Gandhi - a pacifist who changed the world by resisting violence and setting an example for others.

Mother Teresa - who saw herself as woefully inadequate and had to work through continued depression throughout her life. Her 'cure' was to put others first and be a minister to them and ignore herself. She proceeded to do that every day of her life.

Mom and Dads who do their best ever day for their families to feed, clothe and teach them the right way to live.

Abraham Lincoln - a lanky goofy somewhat uneducated man who rose up to lead our country through one of the most difficult times it has ever experienced.

Winston Churchill - a somewhat dumpy, quirky individual who stood up to the Wave of Fascism that was sweeping over the world to lead it back to safety.

And far too many others to mention here ....

You can keep the Hollywood heroes - the world is filled with real live heroes we can see every day.

Hollywood heroes can't hold a candle to the real-life heroes of this world.

I'm guessing you don't know much about Mother Teresa?
