Increasing intermittent rattle - dash above tune/scroll air vent

    Increasing intermittent rattle - dash above tune/scroll air vent

    Have a rattle that was annoying yet something you dismiss…and it wasn’t always present. Rattler has gotten worse…Time to check it out. Expect it is probably something simple…maybe others here have experienced the same.

    Rattle appears to be located between the door open icon and the air vent located above the Tune/Scroll knob. Thought it would only happen when gas engine was engaged, or ice (forget not) however happens now more often than not.

    Tried everything short of removing the dash. I am open to removing the dash with a level of confidence the rattle was indentured and should be fixed.

    have you tried popping the vent out and checking inside? i'm not familiar with gen 1, and i know the plastic is brittle

    Negative. Tried everything u can’t think of short of removing the dash itself. Hopefully a few people here ran into similar issues.

    Have poppers out anything yet - hoping to identify before surgery rather than exploitative surgery.

    i have an audio recording of said rattle…the file upload here is blocking audio file formats.

    You can always compress the audio file into a zip file and upload that. Then people have to download it, unzip it, and play it. Goofy, but that's the way the forums work.

    But ... check out the Media tab up at the top. I think you can upload sound files directly there.

    In this thread there is a video with guidance on removing the center finish panel. It may be very brittle, but if there's any chance of getting it off in one piece, the video should help you maximize your chances.

    At the end of the same thread, you'll see that Bob Wilson and I had both noticed the vent louvers being too loose in that panel. We hadn't really noticed rattling, so much as the vents just self-aiming themselves downward. My post at the end of that thread links to another that describes how I fixed that while the panel was off.

    Not sure if that could be your rattle, or not.

    Do a video, upload to YouTube? YouTube videos link no problems.

    We've got (in our 2010 hatchback) an intermittent buzz in the dash, somewhere around the glove box. Comes and goes (been gone for some time now, maybe a winter thing???), manifests during light to moderate throttle opening. Never got serious about trying to find the source.

    i never had any rattles until i got deaf aids. it's shocking how they caused everything to loosen up

    I have interior rattles too.
    One is from the right front seat bottom when it's unoccupied. Can not reproduce it by whacking the seat with car stopped;
    Another sounds like it's from the glove compartment, but actually has to do with the loose attachment of the flying buttress to the console;
    One is from somewhere in the back.

    But the HVAC vents don't rattle or droop, so far.
