even cnn complained Trump was being hysterical wanting to shut things down as soon as he did. Nothing better than having it both ways. Not that this ping-pong back-&-forth banter is going to cause anybody to change sides. Let the name-calling continue.

To my knowledge, Trump hasn't shut down ANYTHING yet....except civil debate.

If he was out on the links trying to break 100 on the front 9, his approval ratings would be through the roof....BUT ( ) the same thing can be said for fake news.

The complaints I was hearing were that we needed aggressive testing and contact tracing, to find and isolate the cases that had already arrived before that order, not a (pseudo-) travel band-aid without adequate testing. But with the CDC's seriously botched testing program -- very tardy, then defective test kits, all while prohibiting commercial and international alternative tests, and not allowing tests of anyone without 'Wuhan' or 'Diamond Princess' stamped on their foreheads -- meant that we had no meaningful way to identify the pre-travel-ban virus intrusions or prevent them from turning into mass community spread. Nor adequately screen the many folks still coming from China though the many exceptions to the 'ban'.

Then, while Trump was crowing about how wonderful his China 'travel ban' was, we now know from genetic forensics that the virus was flooding in via the European path, long before he closed EU travel six weeks later. A flood we couldn't detect because of the catastrophically botched CDC testing situation.

We didn't need too-little-too-late travel bans back then. We needed aggressive testing and contact tracing.

"The World Health Organization on Thursday declined to categorize the coronavirus sweeping across China as a global health emergency, saying there is no evidence of human-to-human infection outside China."

That was January 23. Just three days after the first known U.S. case, from a business traveler to Wuhan. The U.S. didn't have the testing ability to even look for human-to-human infection until March, when it was already game-over.

 

And yet....WE have been batting this back and forth since January......

 

Yes, we have been battling it back and forth, with many people trying to detect and isolate cases and trace their contacts, and prepare for a likely mass outbreak, while the Deflector-/Deceiver-/Denier-In-Chief kept crowing that his China travel 'ban' was enough to fully contain the outbreak, that cases would soon be dropping to zero, that the virus should miraculously go away in April.

And He Who Must Be Praised, He Who Has Total Authority But Takes No Responsibility At All, keeps trying to rewrite the history of his actions and statements, trying to re-cast them as error-free, not taking any blame for closing several pandemic response teams and programs passed on by previous administrations while simultaneously claiming that no one could have foreseen an outbreak that those programs had been built for. And even blames his predecessor for leaving him a defective test for this virus, never mind that this virus didn't come into existence until several years after. Sometimes even doing his 180 degree turns in just a few minutes.

Timeline refresher:

That was January 23. WHO moved forward with the global health emergency on January 30, after some countries had started closing borders, airlines had stopped some flights, and the first cases person-to-person transmission outside China had just started to be identified:

The CDC was already screening passengers arriving from Wuhan for illness, but was not actually testing them for the virus. It didn't have enough test capacity to do so, and wouldn't have that capacity until much later.
