With Cats (not the meow kind) being stolen left and right, has anyone had luck getting an insurance company to cover installation of a Shield/Lock system? Is this even recommended? Sad we have to contemplate these things.

Either way, how does one best go about protecting a Cat from theft?

That's kinda like the thinking of those "rock chip repair" operations in parking lots at shopping malls that claim its free and then they bill your insurance company a fortune...

As in cat shields are as cheap as $75 and take less than an hour to install... And why would you risk higher insurance rates by making your auto insurance carrier pay for anything that doesn't cost very much?

That being said, you can call your insurance carrier and ask. I'm sure they'll find a way to rip you off as best they can.

My company isn't paying for preemptive cat shields. Nationwide at least, they are not losing cats fast enough to make it a necessary loss prevention measure.

Cat shields are $75. I have a $250 Comprehensive deductible. New Cat would cost the insurance co. $1000+. Seems like a no brainer to me.

The $100 I paid for the shield won't even pay for a tow to the dealership or even a rental car for one day.

Actually, In California it would cost closer to $3K... But don't waste your time trying to get insurance companies to invest in preventative measures. They aren't in the business of doing that. They measure risk and make money off it... Cat theft claims to insurance companies are trivial compared to what they ordinarily deal with.

Add in shop labor and markups, the insurance company would be seeing a much higher installation bill.

When have you scheduled for your cat to be stolen?

It depends on the economics of the loss rate. Only a certain portion of cats get stolen, so they have to figure how many preventative interventions they would be funding per claim avoided. Include allowances for how many cats will still be stolen despite the shields paid for, plus some customers becoming less careful after shields are installed, plus some inevitable fraud. Overall, the intervention could well be more costly than simply paying the claims.

... so far. This is something their loss prevention specialists will almost certainly be watching very closely.

You take your car to the muffler shop down in Crenshaw and you explain the problem to the brother doing the welding He won't make it so that anybody who reaches under that car and grabs even a gloved hand around the areas where needed they will be yelling and screaming very quickly it's very simple to do there's not much to it You can't see under this car when you're doing a lot of this You're doing a lot of it by feel a lot of times with cheap junky gloves and you're welder will handle that spikes and what have you work out very well those little thin things are almost like hypodermic needles going in you when you grab the pipe serious stuff This ain't done at Midas

Precisely. Catalytic converter thefts make the news because its an interesting new theft. But the percentage of converters getting stolen is minuscule in comparison to the number of Prius on the road. Since its the "sexy" new crime, its over-reported by the medial.

Yeah this only hurts people if you're liking one of the three states out west that has all the California emissions BS nowadays here this is a nuisance and an inconvenience but can be straightened out in the day nothing generally has to be ordered unless you just want to spend three grand or 1295 or whatever it is for the original one piece from the dealer which is your prerogative

Just yesterday a lawyer was explaining that if you booby trap something to prevent a theft and the thief or someone else gets injured you will 100% definitely face criminal charges because you are no longer trying to deter theft with your design, instead you premeditated physical injury to another person with your design.

What's more, anything under car that can slice things up is going to collect road debris and create more road kill or worse case scenario create sparks that cause a wildfire...

I had the cat stolen in one of our 2 prius 2 weeks ago in Ohio in middle class subruban area. My mechanic says he gets a call every day about this. They stole a cat from the auto shop next door in the middle of the day caught on video took less than 2.5 minutes. He says not to drop the prius the night before at the shop like I have always done. Its more common than you think. It could also be sharply curtailed by legislation which the city did for house AC compressor recycling about 10 years ago.

This is good to know. Now I won't feel bad for shelling out $250 to stick them with a $3,000 bill.

You keep on paying and paying for insurance including periodic rate increases. Hopefully, one pays only once for a cay shield.

Insurance is the wallet drainer that keeps on taking.
