hey Dave... I think Ill be doing that too.... can you tell me what is the reason they have it in the first place?.... Don't everyone know when they are backing up?..

I could see the rational for it.. if it could be heard "outside" the car?... even then I would want to leave it off and only turn "on" when desired.

I suppose a kid could reach up and pop it in reverse and since its electric it would be so quiet one may not be aware thier rolling till its too late?

Will it even pop in reverse unless your foot is on the brake first?

I have to say that is still slow enough that the average American behind you would have time to go out buy a baseball bat an severely damage your car before it was parked.

The reverse beep is so you don't forget you are in reverse and slam into the car behind you when you want to go forward. It does happen. People are like that. I turned mine off.

Re: parking: I agree with Henry.

    Daniel,

did you turn the Beep off - or your Reverse? The last one solves the "slamming into anything behind" you for good... :p

I still think the car is so quiet backing up that it should be on the outside either that or a speaker with engine noise. I have nearly taken out 2 or 3 people who walked behind my car because they did not hear the car start and did not see exhaust. I vote for a simulated formula 1 engine revving! :D That would be sweet. Put it in R and people would take note of that. On second thought you could use your Bluetooth to download custom sounds! How about a Harley.

sorry Henry... another, albeit, less desired benefit of the Prius is the reduction in noise polution

Well I see it like my radar detector...
I want to hear it, but Once it has my attention... I don't want to keep getting blasted with the full volume of where I set it to get my attention?.. that make sense?... nah!

So how about an auto-mute feature that drops the volume down to 1/4 after 3 seconds, or even off?

How about a couple of nice flame throwers that fire up when you first place it in reverse?.....
Second thought, that hairy dog of yours might not like that one!

Annoyingly enough, quite a few cars here in Japan made in recent years beep on the inside when you are in reverse, not just the Prius. I've noticed it in pretty much all cars with automatic transmitions that I've been in since I've been here. BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP
It makes you hurry your arss up and get going forward.

maybe in time we will be able to talk to our smart key and it will have the car unpark itself and come get us.... and then we can pull up to the restaraunt and tell it to go park itself?.. We can call it the "bat prius!"? :D :D

Well if you have serious issues parking the Tech edition (as it's called over here in The Netherlands) is great. The reason why it is so slow is that setting the parkingspace up is done by the driver and even Prius drivers can make mistakes (yeah really). So by doing it slow you've got time to hit the break if necessary and time to watch if you don't run people over with this great stealth car.

I don't know how the legal system is in Japan, but I'm guessing they don't have near the rights we do..... they can test the product there without fear of reprisal if it fails.
Here.. we would try to sue them if someone hit us while it was performing its function because it wasn't fast enough!
I seriously doubt there are enough bleeding hearts in Japan to get away with sueing McDonalds for thier coffee being hot when someone was clumbsy and spilled it on themselves like there are here! People here don't really care who is right and wrong.... just screw the big guy cause he's rich and probrably deserves it anyway!

I used to work on an Ambulance in a very big city and I saw tons of crap like that where people were trying to fake their injuries etc to get some bucks from the big guy!

I would certainly be afraid to debut such a product here!
