iPhone Messaging Not sure it's worth the effort...

    I have my iPhone 4 IOS 6 recently updated Entune going to try an incoming text message. I am on Bluetooth and have my wife send me a text message. A short time later I see a banner come across the screen (no sound or anything that would let you know you have a message to look at) I tried touching the message banner nothing happens and it disappears. I then have to push the phone button, messages, pick the message then I can see the text. I can touch the speaker icon and it reads the message to me. OK, so unless I was watching the screen I would never know there was a message, and to go through all the screens to have it read is a real waste of time. In my opinion this feature is useless. I tried the process plugging in my phone into the USB jack and it doesn’t work any different. Am I missing something here?

    I have the iphone 4s with ios6.
    With a bluetooth connection, I ask SIRI to "read my new text message" when one comes in. It get's read aloud through the stereo. It prompts me to respond if I want.
    Works very well. No messing with the car's buttons or touch screen.

    Thanks Quentin, It does work it just seems that I have to go through too many pushing the buttons to have the message read to me. Now I did this parked in the driveway not sure it will even allow me to do this when driving. Actually it most likely would not be a good idea to remove your eyes from the road while you are navigation through the different screens anyway. It’s just a shame Toyota could not have put a little more effort into Entune’s before it was released. I hear text to speach works great in the Honda, Oh that’s the other small car company….

    I really like btcompute’s idea and it gives me a reason to upgrade from my iPhone 4 to a 5, just use Siri.

    The Nokia Lumia 900 (WP7.5 -- no Entune) works same way. Totally hands free. Text-to-speech on message receipt and speech-to-texts a reply.

    Mine pops up on the nav screen with an incoming text and I press 2 buttons at the most.

    You might want to reboot your phone if you haven't done so, it didn't work at all on our regular prius until we did so.

    How do you get your phone to show the text messages in the NAV? I cannot get this to work.
    I am I have an iphone 4S IOS6. Are you using the USB Cord? Please help! Thanks!

    Turn ON Show Notifications in the Bluetooth options on the phone. It'll start working on the next connection with the car.

    Try Settings /Bluetooth /
    and on the bluetooth screen you sound see Device underneath. On your device list there is a blue arrow, click that.
    you will see Show Notifications on/off switch.

    After setting above, I had to reboot my iPhone 5, then the used to be gray out "MESSAGE" button lights up. However, after I received the messages, I pressed the button but there was nothing. I looked at the option and all was set at ON. I will check again later.

    Did you get the messages when the phone was connected to the car or before?

    Never.. only managed to get the Message button to change from gray out to press-able.

    Sorry, I meant did the text messages occur on the phone before or after it connected to the car? Apple only sends new messages received after your phone connects to the car, nothing from before. So, you'll only be able to read messages received while in your car.

    you have to be stopped to be able to send or read the messages. You can read the first few words only while moving.

    Huh? The entire message is delivered by text-to-voice via the car audio system, which permits a voice-to-text reply, if desired.
