On the infotainment system, what is the iPod audio source? Is it in some sense limited literally, specifically to an iPod, and not an iPhone nor iPad? That, as opposed to using "iPod" to refer to any Apple audio device?

Is it a physical (lightning USB) connection only?

Perhaps even more interesting, does it allow for AAC digital audio, as opposed to MP3 only, perhaps?

    iPhone ? Pro

I connected my iPad today in my Prius Prime Premium. I can do it via Bluetooth or plugging into the Prime's usb port. If you plug it in it shows up under the iPod source.

Well it's specifically for an apple product that can play music via the USB port. They pick iPod since it's associated with music.

Yes you can play AAC.(.m4a extension IIRC). You can also play ALAC (.m4a extension).

If you use bluetooth, then it'll come up under the Bluetooth Audio source.
