IRS just posted the 2012 plug-in Prius for $2500 tax credit

The credit is under Code Sec. 30D:

"For vehicles acquired after December 31, 2009, the credit is equal to $2,500 plus, for a vehicle which draws propulsion energy from a battery with at least 5 kilowatt hours of capacity, $417, plus an additional $417 for each kilowatt hour of battery capacity in excess of 5 kilowatt hours."

If you read the actual statute, it is clear the "base amount" of the credit is $2,500, and the minimum battery size is 4 kilowatts. The test mules had 5.2 kilowatt packs, so at one time we were hoping to get close to a $3,000 credit.

 

I see it now.
Of course it comes after discussing the $2500 plus for 5kwh packs.

Who wrote these IRS Credit Rules? Toyota is the only one getting just $2500. The rest are getting $7500.

I agree. It is ineffective since it is only based on the battery size; nevermind the efficiency, class or emission.

95 MPGe / 50 MPG Prius ($32k) gets a third tax credit of 53 MPGe / 20 MPG Fisker Karma ($100k).
