I've been looking at getting a used, low mileage, late model Gen III (Plug-in specifically) Under what circumstances is it worth paying extra to get the "Toyota Certified Used Hybrid warranty"? It seems like it costs a thousand dollars extra to get it.

For the most part, it has no real value. The dealer may try to convince you otherwise, but all they do is an inspection. Around here its expected that a used Toyota sittin on the dealer's lot will be certified - or there's something wrong with it. If its really a "low miles" car, the hybrid system is still under factory warranty anyhow.

Don't over pay for some marketing hype that isn't worth the paper
it written on. Buying new is the best way to go, but if you're gonna
buy a used car. I would look to a private party sale. The dealers charge
way to much for used car. They lowball the trader and rape the new buyer.
You won't get a better car at a dealer. The best thing to do is have a private
party vehicle inspected at a local shop. This will give you buying leverage
if they find worn out, wear items. If they find problems, you might wanna pass.
Dealers are major rip off artists and they'll rip off anybody they can.

    Why?

My problem is finding them. There are not that many used Plug-ins around, let alone for sale. I am using various on-line searches, but these seem to be exclusively populated by dealers.

If you're financing a used car, be sure to compare the final total cost to a new car with 0% financing. You might be surprised.

Exactly (y) Plus it new and has the warranty to go with it (y)
Used cars are not always the deal you think they are. If the previous owner neglected anything
you're stuck with the aftermath and it could be expensive. Used cars sometimes cost more to
purchase than NEW. Do the math and you'll know, WHY!
