Is Mobile 1 High Mileage oil a bad match for the Prius?

Old left, new right. If anyone can direct me to a site that will decrease the size of the file I would be thankful!

"High Mileage" oil is ONLY the right choice when you have an engine that already HAS high mileage AND is showing signs of high oil usage too......which can't be explained by leaks.

I personally would not consider it unless and until you are using more than a quart of oil every 3000 miles or so.
Even then, it probably will be a temporary fix and a prudent person probably should start shopping for a replacement vehicle.

 

Actually, if you started using Mobil 1 BEFORE oil consumption issue started, please call them about it. Would be very interested to see if this is a covered issue which they may help with......

At about 24k miles, I will ask Mobil when 75k miles comes along, what their opinion is, Annual Protection, vs EP High Mileage....

 

Be careful what you ask for, lol. The original file was not that big, 700x900 ish pixels. And: you could read it, lol.

 

Try Costco online. They carry more weights of Mobil 1 than the stores. Also try Walmart.

 

You don't "treat" a disease if there are no symptoms.......usually.
That applies here too.
If you search around a bit you can find that out now, without waiting another 50K miles.

NO oil company that makes one recommends a "high mileage" oil for an engine that is showing no symptoms of wear and increased oil use.

 

I thought they did, actually. I can distinctly remember standing with a bottle in my hand, maybe 20 years back. The message was something like this:

"Is your car getting on in miles? Then it's time for..."

They almost had me sold, lol. Absolutely no mention, that it's specifically formulated to swell gaskets, that this was a one way trip, and best left until the car was a knackered oil eater. Nada.

 

I see no indication, just: "You've got 75K miles? Time for this."



And on the backside, a vague statement about "seal conditioner":

 

You have been around long enough NOT to expect most any big company to tell the whole truth about ANYTHING ........if there is a potential to make them a few extra pennies.

I think what you said was true when those products were first introduced.
Most of them are a bit more careful now.........since there has been some independent input into the appropriate use.
(Edit) But not all, apparently. I really don't understand why they do that.

 

The key is to notice: to HELP prevent... to HELP extend.
It does NOT say it DOES does either. It would be impossible to PROVE it does neither.

 

That’s a tough one, because prevention, ie. vaccination, has done away with some serious illnesses of the past, ie. smallpox....

My previous Toyota was a 1993 Corolla DX Wagon, in which I changed to Castrol GTX (High Mileage) after it started using oil (at about 100k miles). The Castrol worked wonders for the engine as it stopped using oil, but unfortunately it didn't do much for the rocker-panels (sills) which rusted out (NE Winters ), and the car failed the state inspection at about 290,000 miles (21 years) (…but the engine still ran perfectly!) - but, as they say YMMV!

 

It's common for others to suffer for and pay for the mistakes of irresponsible others.

 

That's because we're now living in The Age of Entitlement
