To answer the question: Is the internet making us all dumber? No. We're all getting dumber all by ourselves, just by the natural process of decadence. The internet has nothing to do with it.

The internet allows nearly illiterate people to type their thoughts out and share it with the world, creating the illusion that we as a whole are getting dumber. The reality is that stupid people have always been around and not that much has changed. The same phenomenon has occurred on things like adultery, child abuse, etc. Whereby we think the world is getting more F-ed up, when in reality, we are just hearing more and more stories about those things than we used to. They've always been there, but we're more likely to hear about it now than before.

Now, lazier? I'll agree with that.

 

It definitely has dumbed down the media, now that anyone can create a slick blog and pretend they are Edward R Murrow while breaking vitrually every rule in Journalism 101.

 

Very few MSM outlets follow those rules, why should amatuers?

 

When a blogster puts out his two cents, I don't expect him to be Cronkite, but not a sequel of Dumb and Dumber either.

I used to think I was smart, but now I'm more aware of how much I don't know.

 

I corrected your internet speech to include multiple common spelling errors.

Now try telling the general public that typing out an entire word may be a little slower, but it makes the message ten times more readable overall.

As for the internet making us "dumber", all I have to say is that there are PLENTY of stupid people out there breeding. By age ten their offspring has likely found their way online somehow or another.

 

That's right. Also, you can find people who have your same interests easier (for example, I heard there's a board out there strictly for people who drive a Prius! No, really!).

 

There's a silly movie out there, Idiocracy, the premise of which is that stupid people have lots of kids, while intelligent people have few or none, so that the smartest people in the future are stupider than W.

The future is now.

 

the internet gives a broader audience to the idiots of the world. it also gives other idiots broader access to the rants of the former idiots. i think the greater convergence of idiots drags down the average intelligence level...

I know the internet had made me smarter. If it wasn't for this site i wouldn't have learned so much about my car. Not to mention everything else i have learned on the internet.
