i was thinking corolla too, but the great thing about the prius is, there's really nothing to compare it to. it's better than a corolla in every way except price. it's not as nice as camry. maybe there's a scion/matrix/yaris? but prius gives you the best of all worlds imo. and if you want to load it up, that's a personal preference. if you can't plug in much, hov is the only real advantage and the main reason why many in cali are buying them.

I haven't seen that. How much tax incentive are you adding?

I can only get $2500 tax incentive where I live. Also, remember that you must have a tax liability to deduct this amount.

he didn't mean price, he meant features. base pip has more than base non pip.

while I don't want to go digging into anyone's finances, if you total tax liability is under $2500, then i find it hard to believe that you can afford a $30+k car (Prius 5+AT)
    Also, what bisco said.

my point wasn't to claim that a Corolla is anywhere near the Prius in terms of features offered and comfort. My point was that with the low mileage of the OP (under 5k/yr), fuel economy is a bad criterion for making the choice of what car to buy.

On the PIP advanced is there really no remote car starter or 17 inch alloy wheels? Also noticed no LKA but I can live without that one.

well none of the Prius models have a remote car starter. Both PiP models feature remote A/C activation, and the Advanced model, if I remember correctly, allows you to schedule A/C activation as well, if the vehicle is plugged in at the time.

The non plug in has a "Remote Engine Starter [30] (V4)$499 MSRP" but no option in build a prius for the plug in

these accessories are installed at the port or the dealer, so i wouldn't be surprised if you could get them on the plug-in as well.

Some folks have business situations that lower their tax liability, even though they have a respectable income.

If your driving less than 10K miles per year, 12 miles per trip, and you can only charge twice a week, maybe consider a low mile Volt lease. I have seen some $199/month leases with no cash upfront, 10,000 miles per year. That is like $7/day for a nice ride. You can get 80 miles a week with the two charges and if you can find a charging station at a grocery store or someplace where you kill a few hours on a weekend you could get 120 miles a week without gas. ideally you want to charge at home overnight.

the lease deals are available because the leasing company can claim the $7500 federal tax credit.

OP is talking about even less mileage - under 5k/yr - so it seems to me that it doesn't really matter what sort of car she gets (from an economy standpoint)

true, but where could she get a $7/day new vehicle that doesn't have gas expenses or even an oil change for two years?

Prius lease is currently $8/day ($9 including gas) at 12k mi/yr and gives you a much more versatile car, imho…

and the charging scenario for her is very unclear (twice a week? will it always be open and available long enough for her to fully charge? once Volt starts sipping gas, it gets expensive real fast)

what kind of mpg does the Prius get for a 6 mile cold start trip? I assuming that 12 miles per day is two 6 mile trips.

volt is a good option mileage wise. but it's not the same size as prius so has to be part of the consideration.
