Is there a place to buy a cubby subwoofer/enclosure?

    Speaking of enclosure volume, what was the finished volume of Tim's enclosure? I read this whole thread (!) and didn't see it, though I might certainly have missed it...

    He did mentioned it somewhere... I thought it was in this thread. Since he recessed his more, I believe he said 15-16l.

    Well, I sectioned off my enclosure with a few layers of mat. I was hoping for more reduction but ended up with around 2 gallons or 15.61 liters. That puts me right in the high-end of the sealed enclosure volume.

    If you wondering what the red stuff is, well that was foam board that I used to build the wall. It is reactive to the resin, ha.

    Be hooking it up tomorrow to see how it performs! :rockon:

    Well that made a substantial difference. The bass is tighter and the volume much better plus it doesn't sound over-driven. I can feel the bass now. :)

    Still not as loud as my home, powered Polk sub but good enough. Moral of the story... make sure you stay within the speakers specifications when it comes to the enclosure's volume!

    Now just imagine what it would sound like tuned with 450-500 RMS. Cudos for taking on this kind of project.

    How did you guys end up securing the sub enclosure in such a way that (a) it's not going anywhere, and (b) you can easily(ish) get it out when necessary?

    While it fits snugly enough that it wouldn't move in normal driving, I wanted to add a measure of safety in the event of a crash. I simply added an eyebolt to the enclosure and used a 1,500 lb. cargo strap to tie it to the spare tire!

    Tim has cleverly placed the terminal cup so that it lines up with the taillight access panel, allowing the speaker wire to be easily routed out of sight behind the trim panel. I did some measurements and found that I could put an eyebolt just above and to the right of the terminal cup, so that the eye would nestle into the same access hole without hitting the taillight or taillight wiring.

    I used a 5/16 eyebolt, a thin nut and fender washer on the outside, and a fender washer and locking nut on the inside. In order to make sure it would not leak air, I trimmed back the carpeting to clear the fender washer, drilled the smallest hole possible, and sealed everything with duct seal compound. (I also cut the eyebolt to length so it wouldn't have any chance of hitting the sub's basket.)

    My first thought was to use aircraft cable and attach to the eyebolt with a small carabiner or threaded link, but I realized it would be impossible to keep it from rattling along with the bass. I thought that a strong webbing would be a good way to attach it without extra rattles. I used a 1,500 lb cargo strap for the webbing, but I'm still working on the best way to attach it securely while still making it easy to remove. Right now I just have it looped around the spare tire and tied with a few knots--far from ideal, but better than nothing. (One easy alternative would be to use the strap that Toyota provides for securing a full-size wheel/tire when you have a flat and have to put on the space-saver spare. However, I'm not sure how strong the cam buckle is on that strap.)

    Oh, and here's what mine looks like with gray carpeting and the JL sub painted gray. I just used a gray primer for now, but if anyone has found a gray spray paint that perfectly matches the light gray carpet of the cargo area, let me know!

    I will forever wonder what color blind individual designed the gray carpeted rear cargo area of the Prius......with tan everywhere else (on the Prii with tan interior)! Drives me bonkers...... Does NOT match!

    Just got my 2012, and notice that the trunk mat extends all the way into each cubby area. Did you have to cut yours to remove the piece under the sub, or did previous years' models have a different trunk mat?

    Not a big deal to cut it if I have to, just curious.
