I'd price gel coat and "carpet ready" (resin finish) differently.

The gel coat finish won't be that pretty since I gave it a something of pebble-grain finish.

It seems the best and very small availabilty of speakers that will fit both sides, seems to be the JL 10W3. I think thats what I am going to do. I just ran the wiring for the remote and rca cables today (in preparation for these boxes) I do not know where I am on the depth chart but I hope I am near the top ;) lol

Looks like we have about 11" of depth.

Gel coat is an additional step. Plus, when I add the face, where the face meets the back won't be gel coat. I could spray a layer of gel coat over the whole thing, but you'll sand most of it off prepping for paint.

If I make a mold of the face, then I can get a gel coat face. But, in the trunk, I think carpet or another cloth covering is the way to go. Paint will Only get damaged back there.

Something like carpet, headliner, suede, or something like that is what I have in mind for the face. The back I was just gonna leave alone since it's out of site. Look at any of the sample pics that have been posted lately.

yeah I thinnk carpet is def the way to go. And it doesnt need to match the color, I think black works well with any contrast

Tim I only mentioned gelcoat in passing and was not meant to distract. Know the time this takes from your life and business is respected. Checked your homepage and we may talk "later" about some work for my GT6. Thanks.

I'd love a GT6. I have a fuel injected TR7 that I'd like to get sell for one fo the following; GT6, Herald, MG 1100/1300, or MGB-GT.

    Awesome, Tim!

Does anybody know what is the best sound damping material to put inside the enclosure to minimize rattles and mute some unused back waves? I remember reading something about fiberglass and polyfill used for sound damping, but have no clue what kind and quantity it should be ...

    NIce.

Did you really mean JL 10W6? or JL 10W3? I thought the 6 was too deep?

We were really trying to give the enclosure enough volume to use the 10W6, but if we did, after we add the grill, we wouldn't be able to easily open teh floor panel for storage needs.

We considered a beast from Hertz, the HX 250 D, but a 9" magnet was just too close the enclosure walls once the grill is added, but we had plenty of enclosure volume.

When I say "we", I'm only speaking as the fiberglass guy. I'll never hear the system :(

I was thinking a pair of 8"s with dual voice coils would be fun, and look realy cool in the enclosure at different firing angles. But, that's just me.

    Hey Tim,

If you have time, can you give me an approximate estimate of the rear I.D. clearance for the HX 250D based on the specs given? Also what is the approximate volume of this box? Need some numbers. Haven't given up yet. PM'ed ShawnB2 asking him to chime in on this as his worked with this speaker.

Your time is valuable and much appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure how it stacks up depth-wise vs. the 10W6, but the Image Dynamics ID-Max 10" is a good alternative performance-wise.

It is too deep for the enclosure Tim is building. Tim and I did some measurements and concluded that the speaker mounting depth should not exceed 6" as it will be very difficult to fit it properly and leave enough space on front for a grille. That's why 10W6 was excluded, along with many other speakers that are definitely better (and also more expensive) than 10W3.

Image Dynamics also requires min. 1.5 ft3, 3 times more than Hertz and twice than 10W6. We can compensate the volume by lying some Poly-fill, but not that much.

I got 4 Ohm myself and I can add a second 4 Ohm speaker later (JL HD900/5 amp can handle between 1.5-4 Ohm @ 500W). All depends what your amplifier can handle.

I'm sure if we bumped it out enough, we could get a HX250D in there. But, we needed to have access to open the floor panel with a grill on it. From the look of ShawnB2's pic, the floor panel won't clear the grill. Again, this was a MAJOR factor in the setup. But, what's better than one 10W3? Two! LOL

Yes, I see that.. I got my 10W3 this morning, but I can always return it if I decide to go with HX250D. I don't like the grille design on shawnb2's subwoofer :) .. with all these things lying around it is just a matter of time something will hit the speaker's membrane. I really like the mesh grille on JL sub's.

shawnb2: Where did you get this grille from? Link?
