I installed an internal button to open the hatch in my Prius Gen 2. While digging through the hatch I discovered a piece that simply looks like an additional weight. It is located in the center bottom of the hatch. Just above the lock. I took it out, and it doesn't seem to be connected to anything else. Since my pneumatic mechanism (already replaced once) isn't the strongest any more, I decided to leave it out.

Does this weight have any other purpose?

Your hatch doesn't NEED a weight.
It's pretty heavy just being a hatch.

If you want to see how heavy, take the lift assist struts off of it for a day or two..... ;)

if everything works fine, and the hatch opens easier, leave it out

I took it out some time ago. Works well. Though now I'll start noticing the vibration ;)
