I've read reports the 1.5 litre second generation prius is sluggish and struggles to overtake other vehicles at highway speeds, but also read that it does a quarter mile in 10 seconds. They can't both be true.

So how fast or slow is the second generation prius? What other cars is it similar to in terms of speed/power?

NHW-20. Not sure why Wikipedia says it’s XW-20.

Yeah no Prius is doing the quarter mile in 10 secs. That’s Model S P100D territory. I think you misread it. It’s 0-60mph in 10.5 seconds (0-100km/h in around that time).

It’s comparable to a 1.8 litre petrol of that era. Slightly faster than a 1.4 turbo diesel or a 1.6 litre petrol.

Passing manoeuvre will be faster than any of those cars with those engines mentioned above because of the CVT. There’s no need to downshift because there are no gears so the engine response is quicker.

    props tideman

1.8 litre power is sufficient for me and CVT sounds good, I'm sold! And you're right, I misread the 0-60 for quarter mile.

    It's much faster than my '77 Mercedes 240D, with a factory-rated 0-60 time of 29.5 seconds.

I got over sports cars about a decade ago, but after owning an old 1.5 litre nugget that caused traffic jams each time there was a slight gradient in the road I now see the value in having some power
