It's time to consider reinstating Pete Rose as a candidate to the MLB Hall of Fame

1919 World Series black sox scandal was the impetus.

For those who want to read up:

Possibly the worst sports scandal ever...Black Sox Scandal - (The White Sox lost to the Cinnicanti Reds in the 1919 World Series. Pete Rose was not gambling on the series. :p )

As a result of that scandal, a commissioner of baseball was created - Kenesaw Mountain Landis.

And none of the eight 'Black Sox' players ever played again.

Pete did not fix the World Series. So all we have is a rule in a sport game meant to protect us from fixing a game. Pete did not do that he just placed bets.

This is my opinion. Pete is an athlete and has a problem with gambling. He needs help. His records are outstanding as an athlete. He should be given the benefit of the doubt. I say his records be reestablished and let the HOF decide his fate in the HOF while he breathes.

I know the PC crowd may not agree but that's my opinion.

What about all the convicted confessed dopers that hold records and will be in HOF
Some day. The same thing that happened to Armstrong should be done to the dopers

I guess the problem with falling from grace...is that you've fallen from grace.

I mean does it matter? Pete Rose gambled, he got caught, he admitted to it, he was banned. Regardless of minutia of intent or execution of his gambling activities, there is nothing that erases that from his professional history.

If the parameters are changed for Pete Rose, and he was reinstated or gained entry to the Hall Of Fame it would forever be with the asterisk of his past behavior and gambling attached. There is really nothing that can be done about that now.

I don't really care that much about it. From a pure talent standpoint, surely Pete Rose is one of the most talented players NOT in the Hall Of Fame, if not for his gambling indiscretions he surely would be in the Hall Of Fame.

But I don't think you necessarily support his inclusion today, based on the fact that worse indiscretions and violations are happening with players today. That's kind of moving backwards in ethical evolution. The darker sins of today, should not be used as justification for nullification for the sins of yesterday.

I think Pete Rose has said he is sorry. I believe his gambling did NOT affect his play or the outcome of games, but YES given Baseballs history with the dark specter of gambling, I don't know if an exception can be made. I don't know if it should be made.

If you make it, you are saying, on one level, unacceptable or unethical behavior IS acceptable or forgivable, IF ultimately you play great or are a great player. Which is the disease that has lead to the drug scandals of today.
I mean imagine a borderline or journeyman baseball player suffers a similar ban for similar behavior, are we even discussing the removal of his ban? Is being an admittedly great player, justification for a different set of rules to be applied?

I think it's unfortunate that a player as undeniably great as Pete Rose may never be in The Hall Of Fame, but at this point I think he stands as a nobler example of why it is better to follow the rules and do what is right by NOT being allowed in The Hall Of Fame then he would if the league reversed itself and made an exception solely to recognize his talent.

Perhaps Pete may be the guy who reversed the rules on gambling for players within limits.

Do you own Pete Rose's rookie card by any chance or any other memorabilia which could be expected to soar in value if MLB relents and allows his induction into the HoF?

    It's BASEBALL.
It mattered a little back in 1919, but we've got a few more entertainment options now.

I gave up on them looooooooooong ago. MLB used to be relavent. Now it's not.
I mean.....I'll watch it instead of an NBA game, but that's not saying much since I'd rather get my prostrate exam done than watch another NBA game.

I was a Reds fan in the 70s when I was a kid, and I remember when old Charlie used to run the bags.
I've got mixed feelings about a lifetime ban, but I'm thinking that it would be refreshing to actually see then stick with their principles....to include slapping juicers with the same lifetime ban.....BUT.
I'm no longer a fan...it's no longer the national sport...and they could make Pete Rose the next baseball commissioner for all I care!

    NFL...take notes.

There shall be a new institution named
Major League Baseball Hall of Records.
If you are caught doping, then your not in.
But if you gambled but did not do so to alter the outcome of the game, then you're okay.

I believe the way the rule is written if a player is caught throwing a Quarter in a slot machine in a cell phone video camera he can be in trouble with the Commissioner

    Maybe an update is needed

I remember back in the day, they were giving Willie Mays grief because he associated with a casino... and I think he had already retired or was doing some coaching or something... anyways, it was about gambling too.

Gambling is a red line in MLB.
