Since starting to drive with my 2005 Prius in October. I'm now starting to see some of my best mileage. The weather has warmed up a bit, but my driving technique has definitely improved alot.

    Best tank mileage: 50 mph
    January tank mileage: 45.5 mph
    Tank miles: 414 miles
Gallons consumed: 9.1 gallons. Unable to fill up past 9.1 gallons before pump shuts off.
    Temperature Range: 30 to 45 deg F

Some commentary of what I've experienced in trying to learn how to drive better.

    1) When starting off from a cold engine, apply gentle acceleration. You're mileage will be displaying numbers below 20 mpg quite a bit, but don't panic and try to accelerate harder so that you can coast sooner.

    2) After about 5 minutes of warm up you can start trying to do some pulse-and-glide techniques. In the pulse phase it's recommended that you accelerate with no arrows going to or from the battery. This is known as "dead band" driving. However, I've found there are at least two distinct regions of acceleration where dead banding occurs. At really gentle acceleration there's dead banding. But at a more brisk acceleration it occurs again. I try to choose the more brisk region. Note that while you are in dead banding your mileage will generally be below 20 mpg. The biggest thing that I've learned is not to panic with this low mileage as I will get it back when I can start to coast.

    3) During the glide phase you're told to try and get no arrows to appear. However, in real life you might have a line of cars pushing you to go faster on the local roads. Ideally your supposed to pulse to 40 mph and coast to 30 mph. I have to pulse to about 55 mph and coast to 45 mph. Note that in coasting at this higher speed you may not be able to get no arrows to appear. In that case I have at times elected to cruise with a bit of electric. On level road, the battery seems to last quite a bit.

It's been pretty warm over the past couple of weeks. Around 4°C or so. I averaged 4.9L/100km on the tank before that, which included a trip out to Banff.

lol. We're sitting at 6-10°C and rain for the last 2 weeks and I'm at 5.0L/100km. 4.6 is what I get in the spring/autumn at 15°C!

    Last tank for January-

    682 miles at 58.5 MPG.

Calculated higher but I go with the MFD as it is more consistent.

On a side note. The consumption in my 4200 sq ft house for January was 896 KWh and 10 gallons of propane. I'm equally proud of that. That's not to say we couldn't do better.

My best January ever. ~1300 miles averaged 54.6mpg. Thanks mostly to this being the second warmest January in history in my area, but also to the use of my Engine Block Heater.

Lifetime is up to 52.7mpg and if Feb. and March are anywhere close to my lifetime average I should be able to reach and/or surpass 53mpg for lifetime by this summer.
