Japanese PM warns that radiation is spewing out of reactor. No word as to which one but he also expanded evacuation zone to 19 miles. I wonder how much is hype by news channels to boost ratings?

Having a hard time here getting current on this news! But I cannot stay with the matter. Grad student here needs hand-holding figuring out how to quantitatively trap carbon dioxide with alkaline. So duty calls, y'all keep tuned to Japan and we must hope that today, somehow, does not bring loss of containment.

Dang it, I so wanted to believe that units 4 5 6 were fast asleep. Seems not to be the case.

Me thinks you need to read up on how a nuclear plant is constructed. If the explosion was serious, it would not look anything like the above picture. That is concrete dust from a hydrogen buildup.

    Stay safe Ken.

CNN is reporting that the company who runs nuke has been caught lying about other events. Observers have said company spokesperson is tight lipped and appears reluctant to answer questions. Sounds like SNAFU to me.

Which is why the Prime Minister's office has taken control of the reports and has just warned that "it is very likely that further releases of radiation will be much worse." The total opposite of what we have been hearing in the last three days. Refreshing that the obfuscation seems to be ending now but dire in the candidness of it.

    Ummmm... Bra...

I am not a nuclear engineer... absolutely true.

But I have read about these kinds of power generation plants in quite some detail... I did not go into the field for employment, I have kin in the electrical power plant generation business, a couple are certified as operators; I am also a lifelong friend of a couple of men that are in the nuclear power generation field... and I have been photographed in protest of certain designed power plants as UNSAFE. From the time we had more folks in the Battery (I was one of the folks in the orange shirts, if you know about MUSE that is) than the majority of cities in our nation, to me sitting on the roadway at Mt Diablo... I also was one that supported the decommissioning of Rancho Seco here in the valley.

NOTHING I have said is speculative... it is concerning to know that naive folks, like your remarks indicate you are, will listen to the govt line pablum and swallow it completely satisfied that there is no concern.

I do not believe there is no reason for concern.

    Your opinion is yours. :thumb:

Another explosion was reported in the last hour from the site at a different reactor than the first two that have blown the containment buildings apart.

Don't be alarmed... cause, well, we have the govt folks a saying not ta be, right.

Sheeple... I swear, sometimes all ya hear is the bleating of the complacent herd, and they try to convince you that the explosions you see on the videos isn't as bad as it looks.

And I agree... be safe Ken.

#4 was down for maintenance when quake/tsunami hit. Sounds like the cooling system failed even for a non- running reactor.

It was the quake of a lifetime...

I am surprised it isn't failing faster frankly.

Those folks on the scene are doing a phenomenal job of delaying these failures.

I hope the govt does it's job and get the citizens out of harms way.

More importantly Bra... is the fuel.

Spent rods are still a very dangerous thing.

Personally, I am a huge fan for reprocessing... but the anti-weapons folks don't like that at all because of the plutonium that can be retrieved... which is understandable...

I am a fan of SAFE NUKES... the plant in question uses a fuel I do not believe is a safe fuel. :drum:

I worked at Diablo Nuclear Power Plant in the IT dept for PG&E for about six or eight months back in 87. Really wanted to keep that job but as a contract employee and with regular PG&E employees being laid off, oh well. Never had the security clearance to go into the power plant or the containment building. It's rated to either 6.5 or 7.5 i'd still take that job back if offered.

Now CNN is saying a 3rd explosion just happened but which plant/reactor is unclear and they also report that the tone of news and reports has changed.

NHK's already preparing the people for radiation exposure and how to minimize it... staying indoors, cleaning clothes worn outside, etc.

How IRONIC... the folks there don't have the ability to do that.

I wish peace to the brave souls that will face that fire.

    Heroes everyone.

Only 10% of Japan is without power. Clean water might be the more serious issue, and they're probably not going to do too many unnecessary wash loads.

Ok, I think NHK World news has cleared somethings up. There has been an explosion in reactors one, two and three. Reactor four was shut down four months ago but caught fire anyway for unknown reasons. The explosion in reactor two was the largest and did more damage, possibly damaging the suppression pool under the reactor. About half(?) the core is exposed and the only means possible to cool the three core is by dumping sea water directly into the containment vessel.
