The freeze method has the rapid temperature change working for it. The means of accomplishing that with heat probably aren't ones you want to employ at that location.

    An impact screwdriver does wonders;).

IMO, it’s worth removing the cap so you can actuate the plunger and clean the area thoroughly :).

Then you don’t have to worry about missing a spot(y).

It didn't seem like those Vessel impact screw drivers were turning at all. I tried my regular impact screwdriver when I had the valve off, but it was starting to chew up the screw head, due to Phillips head bits I think. Hmm.

I marred ours a bit, but for how frequently you have to do the activity, it shouldn’t matter;).

It’s worth a shot to ensure the passage is clean though(y).

I ended up drilling and tapping mine out then replaced with Phillips screws. Was really easy to tap out.

In the video at start of this thread, there's one example where he drills out the screw, with a small enough drill that it doesn't damage the hole threads, just hollows out the screw. After that it's supposedly much easier to break the screw loose.

There are several screw/bolt extractor kits on the market that just drill out the head of the screw, and then wedge into that hole on reverse with the flip end.

Yeah I've got a set or two of those.

I've really got no need to back those screws out right now, so will leave it for now. I might pick up some JIS bits that I could mount in a ratchet, and maybe the next time I've got the EGR out (if ever) I might try applying the big handle effort. Maybe in in conjuction with the PB Blaster that freezes as it applies solvent.

If I were to destroy the screws to remove them, I could always jury-rig a temporary fastener: a smaller diameter machine screw AND nut, the machine screw small enough diameter that it just passed through the hole, secured with nut on far side. And maybe Home Depot would have metric screws to match; I'm guessing M5 x 25 would do.

I'm thinking they must have put some sort of lok-tite on at the factory, they really don't want you opening it up. And fair enough, when I had the valve off the car I was able to clean it fairly well, just coaxing the valve open and floating carb clean through. But...

Don’t forget you are dealing with different materials that have different properties ;).

Those differences in expansion and contraction lead to the screw being stuck on There:(.

But you’ll never need to do the job again unless you wanna trade with one of higher mileage guys;).

You’re always looking for something to do(y).

    An update:

Have a Honda Pilot up on jackstands, tried the Vessel "impact" screwdriver on the rear disk retaining screws. Banged away with a compact 4 pound sledge hammer: nothing budging. It did not seem to have any rotating action. Got out my old MasterCraft (Canadian Tire house brand), put on a $3 Phillips bit, gave it it a couple of wacks, uhm: it's loose! :ROFLMAO:

Sounds like you loosened it for your Mastercraft;).

Did you hit and turn at the same time?

I kept slight counterclockwise pressure when hitting it.

Only attempted one side with the Vessel. Both sides loosened easily with the mastercraft.

FWIW, I believe the disks have been replaced before. The threads were dry.

Sounds like a set of JIS bits for the Mastercraft would be the bees knees.

It's amazing what you can loosen with a bit that fits exactly.

In your video Mendel I noticed the staked axle nut, if you notice Honda axles don't have threads at the end of the axle so you could remove the axle nut and not damage any threads unlike my Prius.

I knew about the different Japanese screwdrivers but never bothered looking into them. I think almost anything coming from China is the same way. I noticed my miniature screwdrivers for my RC stuff don't fit right.

And then there is the odd ball Reed and Prince screwdriver.

Here is a video on the comparison between a phillips and JIS screwdriver.

I ordered JIS #3 and #2 separately, through amazon.ca. The sellers were "juness japan shop" and "fast japan ca" respectively. In both cases there was no shipping, and not gst/pst, our usual sales tax here. Delivery was predicted to be about 3~4 weeks, and in actuality was 2~3 weeks if I recall correctly. Typically they arrive when you've pretty much forgotten about them, in a soft mail pouch.

Padroo those are Megadora Vessel screwdrivers the original JIS screwdrivers in that youtube.
Extremely high quality not made in China they last years.
Years ago you could only buy JIS from Japan and mostly used in priofessional Sony repair mainly in broadcast, you could only order them from Sony. They had red wooden handles. That’s all we ever used in broadcast.

Now there available directly from mega. Using them for 20 years now,
Only screwdrivers I own. They have no cam out.

... although the upshot of Mendel's experiment seems to be that having a decent hand impact driver to reach for matters more than the exact fit of the bit. (The other upshot seems to be that the impact mechanism supposedly built into the Vessel drivers' handles underwhelms.)
