jump starting another vehicle

Maybe AAA's test is bogus?

 

My idiot friend just used his 2014 Prius to jump start his 2008 Acura TL even though I strongly advise him NOT to do so. Guess he did it right and didn't kill the inverter/HV battery etc. oh well.

 

It can be done, damage is not at all a foregone conclusion.

But the risk of damage is far higher than with traditional cars. Based on feedback from past incidents, I'd say that anyone who needs to ask about it, shouldn't do it. Leave it to the folks who really know what they are doing, and are willing to accept the not insignificant risk.

It also means that I refuse to provide jumpstarts to anyone from my Prius. I carry a portable jump pack instead. The risk is high enough that I'd even personally pay for a stranger's service call, if that were absolutely necessary to avoid giving a jump start from my Prius.

 

You can do it. It's just that an "oh sh-t" moment will cost you a lot of money.
