Jumping 2013 prius from 2013 camry hybrid - burning smell

    Toyota recommends the 5 minutes to equalize a significantly discharged Prius battery prior to a start attempt. Sometimes the discharged battery will drag the typically small diameter jumper cable voltage down and may make a quick first attempt fail.

    Then for step 5 right after that instead of following the instructions I disconnected the cables before starting the prius based on some info I read elsewhere that this may be a safer option. The Prius did start right up but it may be that doing it that way may reduce the chances of a successful start. I don't know for sure.

    It is possible. A large 75 amp dc arc at the point of disconnect can create a more sustained arc than ac. Partially because there is no zero crossing to extinguish the arc quickly. That arc could be what the OP detected. If so, no problem.
