    June 2005 mpg averages

First ever fill-up was today, June 1. Owned the car since April 14.

662 km on the odometer (it read 3 km when I picked the car up)
5.0 L/100km on the consumption screen
    It took 36.18 litres
That would be a calculated consumption of 5.46 L/100km (probably the tank wasn't quite as full when I got the car)

    non-metric
    411 miles
9.56 US gallons, 7.96 IMP gallons
screen - 47 mpg US, 56.6 mpg IMP
calculator - 43 mpg US, 51.7 mpg IMP

Yeah, it's because I live about 6 km from work. It's a bit of a catch-22: I never get into the car's most efficient range of operation, but if I lived farther from work I'd burn more gas by sheer distance (although the numbers would look better).

Here's something else, I see at least two other Priuses/Prii ? a day, and almost no wavers. When I park it on the street or in a lot it's practically invisible to people, but at the gas station yesterday everyone wanted to talk about the car. Even the guy behind the counter had this parting shot, "I guess we won't be seeing much of you anymore".

I do 600 km every two weeks! Living 20 km from work plus weekend trips add up quickly. :)

5.0L/100km ain't bad. I'm at 4.6 right now with 671kms on this tank. 2 bars left.

Like kinghuang, I do about a tank every two weeks.

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with that for a first tank. The car will likely get a bit better after break-in, and my right foot could be a bit lighter, but those short trips will always keep the mileage down a little.

Is this the Canadian-only June results? ;)

First tank for June (2nd tank overall):
414 Miles, 9.85 US Gallons= 42 MPG (Computer had 44.9). Price per gallon: $1.979 (testing native american reservation gas...). Wife drove over half the mileage, and she lives by cruise control...
Lifetime mileage 43.74 over 817 miles.

I just haven't needed to stop for gas yet. So far, it's 510 miles at 61.6 MPG with three bars left on the guage.

    Re: June 2005 mpg averages

Picked up the Prius on June 1, I filled up last night with 408 miles on the car and two bars still showing. I set the pump at the lowest delivery rate, it clicked off at 7.996 gal. I clicked it a couple more times but could only get to 7.998 gal. MFD was saying 43.7 and this figures out to 51.

The one thing however, the car had 5 miles on it when I took delivery, don't know how many were on it when the dealer filled it up...

    no, you shouldn't be getting 397mpg :p

hehe, but seriously, I assume you mean 39.7? That's okay, the dealer may not have filled it up to the brim. Take an average over several tanks. Also, showing your car to friends and family will lower the mileage as you leave the engine running and show them the features.

    Re: June 2005 mpg averages

First fill up on 12 June. I've owned my Prius
since 19 May. I filled with two bars remaining.
I didn't do much of an extra fill, except to round
out the amount to $16.31 (I obviously added a
    smidge extra).
Although my work commute was bringing my
average down, I was able to raise it up with
all the driving I did to and from the Green Party
of Texas convention that we were hosting in
    Dallas.

    8.199 Gallons
    $1.989/gallon
    417 miles
    calculated avg. 50.9 mpg
    MFD showed 51.1

    Re: June 2005 mpg averages

I just got my car in May, but I noticed an improvement in June.

May: 42.0 MPG on 800+ miles

June: 45.5 MPG on 250+ miles

I have just over 1000 miles on the car and have noticed a steady improvment in my MPG. I am still nowhere near the 50+ that some people report, but that is possibly because I am in Los Angeles and have lots of accelerating up hills (every freeway entrance) and lots of traffic waving. (slam on breaks, quick acceleration)

Anyway, looking forward to the gas mileage post break-in period.

    Re: June 2005 mpg averages

Since my mpg post in May the car has had a few fillups after 480-500 miles each avg about 49mpg (actual) and the computer showed mpg in the low 50's. That post in May showed 480 miles of driving yielding computer mpg of 55+ and actual of 59+.

Today I filled the car up. Same filling style ('topped off' a few times after auto shutoff), same station). Tried really hard w/ my methods as stated on the May post. I drove most of the tank this time (wife drove only a little bit). The results are outstanding!!

    Miles: 479.8
    Gallons: 6.904
    Computer mpg: 56.9
    Actual: 69.5!!!!

(BTW, gas in Buena Park, CA is $2.259/gallon)

    Re: June 2005 mpg averages

Tideland P: Yep! I can't put anymore gas in the thing!

My brother and I pride ourselves in figuring out the cars. There is potential in the cars; we're not making something out of nothing-we're just minimizing the wastes in our driving styles. His Honda Insight (EPA 67mpg City) would normally get mpg in the 70-74 range and occasionally would get leg mileage of up to 80-92.

As I wrote in the May mileage post, I try to drive the Prius to make the computer either turn the engine off or run it at a lower setting. Basically I accelerate smartly (not too hard) to cruise (preferably 40-50; Freeway speeds depending on slope and conditions). Then lift completely off and then immediately go back on throttle easy to maintain cruise. Other factors may vary my style but this is basically it.

We're not lollygagging and slowing traffic either. However if in a rush, mileage will suffer.

It's a feel thing combined w/ monitoring the display.

You really can't count on the calculated average for one tank in this car. I think your next tank will fall in at less than the mfd average. Great figures nonetheless. Let us know how the next one calculates.
