Agree with that... one tank MPG evaluation is sort of meaninless. My first tank figured out at 63.32 MPG ( Imp) but now after 12 fillups from 6 Oct 04 to 20 May 05 has averaged out to 51.91 MPG (Imp). We don't really concentrate on getting the best out of our Prius except use cruise whenever possible. And remembering it gets a little cold up here so use the heater a great deal I'm still very happy with the consumption figures. :D

    Re: June 2005 mpg averages

    June 1 to 13 driving.

    Tank Miles: 506.0
    Total Miles: 7964
    Tank MPG: 49.1
    Lifetime MPG: 45.2
    Avg Temp: 70s
    Price of Tank: $22.58
    Price per Gal: $2.18

Naturally, my wife had no problem getting the tank full without overfilling. We both agree we don't top off the tank, and generally use the same pump, but lately I haven't been getting the tank full. Oh, well... no spills.

And we don't fill up often enough to make a study project of it. No patience for that.

    Re: June 2005 mpg averages

I just got my car (2005, black #6) this past Saturday (6-11), and so far it has gone 397 miles and is still one bar above half a tank. It says the average is around 52 - 53 mpg. I will do my own calculations in approx another 350-400 miles when it is time to re-fuel.

    Update June 25, 2005:

I just refilled my tank. I had two bars left, but was making a longer trip today and didn't want to have to stop to refuel on the way. So, I refueled at 501 miles, which had taken 7.9 gal. According to my calculation, that works out to 63.4 mpg for my first tank. I guess I will see what the numbers shape up to over the long haul.

Congrats on getting your car. You will need to get gas at around 600 miles with that average and that is stretching it further than many on this board. The gas guage is not linear. At first you should probably multiply the displayed average by 11 and stop for fuel until you get to know it a little. I push it farther than anyone here and my record tank is 768 miles and that was at 61.8 MPG. If you really want to push it carry a small can of gas with you when you get close, just in case. I would guess you won't want to push it that far. There are only a few as crazy as me. I get a kick out of it though.

i have about 55 miles on this tank. i'm at about 61/61mpg. mostly highway travel. with slow downs and such i stay around the 50 to low 60mph range. this gets me 60 to 75mpg.

I get higher MPG on expressways and highways. I don't have all the patience i should to coast from stop sign to stop sign. I don't want to get ran over by the soccer moms. ( they can't drive as it is.. i don't want to be another target ) :) lol

    Re: June 2005 mpg averages

    Hey Everyone!

I just updated my signature so all that information is current & correct. I have never approached the MPG that many of you seem to get. I am however, still inspired to do better, and frustrated that I can't seem to eek out more Miles Per Ounce (MPO). In my desperation, I did some other calculations that help me keep things in perspective. Using this information I can make some pretty impressive points.

Just prior to buying my Prius I found a neat Microsoft Excel workbook that allows me to enter vehicle costs and track my expenses. (I found it on one of these “Prius Geek†pages) So I don’t have accurate information on my fuel costs for my last car. (Not nearly as accurate as I keep now) So I have to make some educated assumptions.

I have never put more than 10.8 gallons into my Prius. I rarely fuel up until the last bar is flashing. I can’t seem to exceed 11 gallons in the Prius. I average 8.53 gallons per fill. And, I average 387 miles per tank, though my highest is 475. On this last fill I got 14 days on a tank of gas. (453 miles @ $2.22/gallon) Since gas has averaged $2.34 since I bought my car, I am averaging about $3.65 a week in fuel costs.

I traded in a '98 Chevy Blazer that had an 18 gallon tank, and I rarely got more than 250 miles per tank. No I never ran out of gas. My last few tank fills were in excess of $35.00. And I had to do that once a week. Or another way to look at it is that 18 gallons of gas at $2.22 a gallon (current price) = $39.96. But since I know there is no way I put 18 gallons into that tank, that isn’t a fair comparison.

Anyway. My assumptions are that I would be spending in excess of $35.00 a week in gas in my old Blazer. I am now spending less than $5.00 a week in gas in my Prius. (Yes I am calculating conservatively) This means that at this rate I am saving about $30.00 a week in gas.

$30.00 x 52 = $1560.00 annual fuel savings. (Can this number be real???)

Will we ever see gas below $2.00 a gallon again?

At this rate, recovering the difference in cost between a comparably priced ICE propelled vehicle, could be substantially sooner than any prior estimates.

By the way… I finally had the 5000 mile service done at the dealer where I bought my car. They charged me $82.44. I was told that it was more expensive because I asked them to use synthetic oil. No muss, no fuss, no blood no foul. I mention this only because my Blazer used to leave me stranded at random times. Once the transmission had to be replaced (covered under warranty), and another time because the alternator needed to be replaced. (Not under warranty) Still another time the radiator failed on the way back from Vegas and had to be replaced at the cost of over $700.00 (also NOT under warranty). So that car was less than reliable. BTW, I only owned the Blazer less than 3 years.

My Prius has been exceptionally reliable, and I have not had a single complaint. Efficient, reliable, and with all the bells and whistles too, what more could a geek desire? Oh Yeah! A www site that where other owners support each other with a positive and friendly attitude!

Thanks for reading my rambling report.

new average today. 56.4 with 228 miles on this tank. 7 blocks left of fuel.

I was achieving 61/62.. but my job required me to rush a lot of deliveries today :( rushing throug areas like pacifica, daly city, san carlos, menlo park. lot of hills to kill my mpg average.

First fillup in June, third tank overall since taking delivery 13 May 05:

Total miles to date: 1413 miles
Tank miles: 501 miles (one bar remaining, not flashing)
    MFD indication: 58.5 MPG
    Gallons gas: 9.157 gal
    Calculated: 54.712 MPG
    Price/gal: $2.249
    Price tank: $20.59
    Temps: 45-70F

Most of the driving was 20 mile trips to/from work, rural two-lane, 45-60 mph, a few 8 mile trips to/in/from town, 25-45 mph.

Best indicated and calculated tank so far.

First 500 mile tank -- might have seen how much farther I could have gone, but we're going to Kalispell, MT early AM tomorrow and gas stations are few and far between on the 90 miles from Libby to Kalispell. Running out of gas in rural NW Montana is not a trival matter, so discretion had the better of valor. . . there will plenty of opportunites in the future to see what kind of range I can squeeze out of a tank.

So far, *very* happy with the economy and driving experience.

Steve- Congratulations, I love your part of the world btw.

Graz- Try taking in your own 3 quarts of mobil1 and see what they charge. Also, I think tire rotation is a waste of money on tires this cheap. Inspect them and check the alignment at the first sign of trouble. Rotate them at 20k miles. My 5k service is free when I take in my own oil. You should be able to get a much better deal than 80$.

I'm on my best tank so far. 196 miles at 62.8 MPG. First bar hasn't disappeared yet. 800 miles, here I come.

    First June Tank (6/1/05 - 6/15/05)

Temps have been pretty good, lows of mid to high 60's and highs in low to mid 90's. Usually been able to get away with not running the AC and I drove the car almost exclusively in residential streets, usually for 10-20 minute trips with 4 or 5 25 minute trips.

    Total ODO: 12570
    Tank Miles: 552.5
    Gallons: 9.445 @ $2.059
    Calculated: 58.5 MPG!
    Screen: 61.3 MPG

After first 25 miles of refill screen indicated 64.0! Had to let the wife have the car though so it is probably in the neighborhood of 50.

So far this month, 350 miles, 56.9 MPG.

I get good mileage Mon. - Thurs. but on Friday's my schedule changes (I start and leave earlier, which allows me to drive 65+, and cuts my commute from 45 minutes to 22 minutes, but usually costs me a couple of MPG.

I was averaging around 52-54, started accelerating a little faster from a stop and improved my mileage by about 4-5 MPG.

Yeap, I was/am excited. I am confident that I could hit the 60 in town in the warmer months of the year. Unfortunately, my wife took it lower than I thought to 48, but after a couple of trips I have it back up to 51.8. It is not all her fault though, her daily commute is about 5 minutes with several stoplights.

Just got back from the gas station for my second overall tank since taking delivery 22 May 05:

Total miles to date: 1057 miles
Tank miles: 513.7 miles (one bar remaining, not flashing)
    MFD indication: 52.9 MPG
Gallons gas: 8.988 gal after the 3rd click
    Calculated: 57.154 MPG
    Price/gal: $2.179
    Price tank: $19.58
    Temps: 65-88F

That's quite an improvement from my first tank (540.6 miles, 9.971 gallons, 54.2 MPG calculated). For the second time in a row my MFD indication is ~5MPG short of calculated MPG. I wonder why

Regardless of which number and method to go by, I am pretty happy! What a machine! I already saved $41 compared to if I was still driving my 2000 Dodge Neon!

Happy Father's Day to everyone out there!!!

    Ray,

wonderful figures. It must be this bladder thing that accounts for the fact that one person can say "397 miles with one bar about half tank and 52-53mpg average" and here I am with 389 miles on 4 bars for past 10 miles with an average of 59 mpg. I would have prefered it if Toyota had given US customers a standard tank as Europeans received instead we got diapers in the form of a bladder, as if this market is so unconscious of gas usage that we would all forget to fill up and burn out our cars on the first tank.

    ray,

how does one get a free oil change just by taking in oil? You must have to pay labor for them to change it no?

Some dealers give free oil changes to encourage their buyers to get all their service done at the dealership and to keep a relationship after the sale. I for one always check out the new cars while I wait for the oil change. It's actually quite brilliant.

    June 14 to 21 driving.

    Tank Miles: 424.4
    Total Miles: 8389
Tank MPG: 49.1 (same as last time)
    Lifetime MPG: 45.35

Here's hoping the mileage (our fill quality) is now stable or on an upward trend. Looking forward to the next few thousand miles and my engine settling in for improved fuel economy.
