Huh? Prius easily beats the requirement already, with a CAFE rating a hair over 70 MPG.

CAFE uses the OLD EPA estimates (Where the gen 2 got 61 MPG) not the new estimates. So you will be fine, the rest of the cars just catch up to you today.

EPA hasn't been the same as CAFE for a very long time -- since the early1980s? By the time I starting paying attention with my 1986 Honda, EPA highway was already discounted 22% from CAFE figures, EPA city by 10%.

The EPA's 2008 revision discounted the numbers even more.

Yep. OP clearly doesn't understand the difference between CAFE mileage and what's printed on the Monroney sticker. Americans Strongly Favor Raising Fuel Economy Standards to 50 MPG, Poll Finds | PriusChat has some unadjusted values. Prius and Prius c are way past "54.5 mpg" for CAFE purposes.

Also, he should see EPA and DOT to Require 54.5 MPG by 2025 | PriusChat. The "54.5 mpg" is closer to 36 mpg combined on the Monroney sticker.

It's damned annoying to see the "54.5 mpg" number thrown around in the press. On the front page of Yahoo, there's a link to Obama administration hikes CAFE fuel economy standard to 54.5 mpg | Technology News Blog - Yahoo! News right now. Underneath it is the text "A formal agreement with automakers and unions sets a nearly unthinkable goal for mileage in 2025".

Of course, there are all sorts of misinformed bashers and commentors. If the story had only bothered to put in it'd actually be equal to on the sticker and included some current vehicles (e.g. Prius) that are already past "54.5 mpg".

Per the 2012 data file at Download Fuel Economy Data, the Prius c counts as getting "70.7 mpg" for CAFE purposes.
