The rear bumper is torn and hanging off on the driver side... the deck lid is a bit crumpled... and I was pushed forward about 20 feet into the back end of a Rav 4 that bent the hood a bit...

The Durango that hit me from behind has a halfway broken front lic plate holder... that's it.

Just fricken great... I got this car as my commuter... it is drivable, but I want it fixed by the Toyota folks and not some Po-Dunk chop shop that Progressive insurance may want me to send it too...

The kid that smacked me said he was in a hurry to get to the hospital for his wife giving birth... like that is a reason to speed and dance through traffic until he can't avoid hitting someone...

I really like this little car too...

I swear, if they dilly-dally about his and make me spend coins for this I shouldn't have too... I will not be a nice man... I swear... and the mark I leave will be noticeable...

Sounds like your OK. Those rear enders can be nasty. Should not be any where near totaled by the sounds of it.Probably take awhile for repairs though? Can you rent a car while yours is in for repair or does the shop have a courtesy car? Hal

    Don't worry about it.
    By California Law:
An insurance company cannot force, coerce, or even suggest a repair shop. They can only force you to go to a LICENSED repair / body shop.
I took mine to the dealer and it got fixed just fine at Farmers expense.

I already told the insurance folks that the car will be going to the dealer for repairs...

It's just a pain in the tail to have to deal with this crap now.

And now my shoulder is bothering me.

Tomorrow I will be going to the dealership to see what they will tell me.

I got rear ended when I first got the Prius. I took it to Folsom Lake Collision Center off of Blue Ravine. They did a good job. I would get an estimate from them.

Sorry about your car. There are a lot of loser drivers around Sac. Just yesterday there was a kid in a Honda tailgating me on J St. while texting on his phone (I could see it when we were stopped at a light). He finally passed me where it widens to 4 lanes and tailgated someone else.

I didn't know there WAS such a thing as a dealer-run body shop. I thought the only thing dealerships do now days is sell cars and service mechanical parts ... but that when it came to body stuff ... I thought they left it to the independents. Guess I learned something new!

My son looked at the car and then asked me how much my face hurt...

Evidently, the top of the steering wheel is bent a bit, apparently because of my face...

I don't have much of anything to show how... a small red line across my eyebrows, but I do sorta remember almost kissing the wheel.

Hmm..I'm sorry, I really am...but look at the bright side...sounds like nobody was permanently hurt...including a young impulsive father to be....

My Honda Fit was hit about 6 weeks into ownership...and it is my ONLY car...not my commuter car.

Dealing with the repair and insurance was distracting...sounds like I had less damage than you...just superficial bumper damage for me....

In Oregon? You can go anywhere you want to go for repair. The Insurance companies can suggest "preferred shops" but they cannot make you take them to them. Sometimes they try to entice you with "Lifetime Guarantees" of their workmanship but ultimately the choice is yours...

It is a pain...and make sure you get everything checked out with your Prius including frame alignment. Make sure YOU are healthy..then sit back and realize that you evidently still have other cars...and ultimately a new baby is born to a parent that wanted to be at the hospital..and really...that's not all bad..

The tire marks on the pavement from the Durango were for about 60', before the impact... on wet pavement... so he wasn't going too fast... just fast enough to make me have a miserable day.

Are you okay? Be SURE to get yourself checked out by a doctor and/or chiropractor. Don't settle with insurance until you KNOW that you have no lingering physical issues.

Oh man sorry about that, I know what it's like

In 1991, some lady rear ended a Bronco behind me possibly at 40+ mph, pushed into me, then both of us like 30 ft. forward. Totalled 3 cars. The headrest did just about nothing to help my head in that Ford Escort car. Mid back not the same.

I hope your headrest did its job. Did your head go back, then forward?

Active headrests in the 3rd Gen supposed to come forward in rearend collisions.

Sorry to hear about that. A Pruis is too nice of a car to get rear ended. Good luck getting it fixed.

    Speeds ?
20 ft is one car length so you can't be going more than 10 mph or so...

    Tougher than a speeding Durango....

I'm glad you're alright, and I hope you get the car fixed properly.

Very sorry to hear about your accident. Hope that you are OK.

My 2001 was hit in the rear by a stupid high school kid driving a Dodge Durango, which caused ~$5K of damage. My wife who was driving the Prius at that time, continues to suffer from back problems five years after the incident.

There is no such thing in our area. Still, it wouldn't hurt to ask the dealership for a body shop recommendation. I'd take that with a grain-of-salt, too.
