That "real cowhide smell" was determined to be carcenogenic. A lot of the "new car smell" is now considered a Bad Thing. So they're changing the processing and the types of plastics. This means a lot of the car leather any more doesn't smell like leather (or it's very faint) because of new chemicals used in the tanning and dyeing processes. This was true of the Bartlett kit I installed. I opened the box and took a deep whiff - and was totally disappointed. I expected a LOT of that "new baseball glove" smell, but.....nothing. Now that it's in, when it's warm it has a BIT of leather smell. I love the kit but am disappointed with the aroma.
