I'm sure this has been discussed many times. This is just a update on my experience. I just changed the key fob battery for the second time in 5 years. When I turned the car off the dashboard indicator said the battery was low. The key fob stays in the car 99% of the time in the garage. I have a spare battery in the glove compartment in case it should need changing when I'm on a trip.

you could probably get a few more years by leaving the key outside the sks range as toyota suggests in the manual, but two batteries in 5 years ain't bad.

might put a little less stress on the 12v also, but i'm not sure.

I agree, a little less, but probably very little considering it has to "look for" the fob all the time when it isn't in the car.
