Gasitman: why presume every other person of the planet is like you ? Years ago I anticipated major increases in salary as I got older, so I agreed with my wife to not save money during the lean years. Debt other than home mortgage was never taken on. I did not buy a new car until I was able to pay in cash. Now salary is about 5x those lean years, and guess what ? We have not increased our spending, we are not swapping our excellent and reliable cars for new, and we save the difference. Well, the difference after taxes

You just proved my point, you, like me, and 99.9% of the people will buy things they never thought they could afford. Of course you will save some, but your spending habits would change.

I am not presuming everyone is like me, and as the previous posts points out, he would buy things that he may not of afforded before. Do you still drive those cars when it was those lean years? Of course not. And I bet when you were making more money, you did not buy the cheapest possible car, I will bet you got something a little nicer.

Now I am not saying people would go out and spend every dime of extra cash, but you only have one life to live, why not enjoy it? Take a nice vacation, buy a car with heated seats, or even buy your wife a little something extra for Christmas. This is what I am trying to get you to understand, not that it is human nature to spend every dime you make. Sorry for the confusion.

Thank you, dogfriend - I know you were after a similar job... fortunately, in a different state!

This was one of those "isn't what you know, it's who you know" sort of situations, I'm afraid. While I am VERY qualified for the job, I did have the advantage - my new boss, is my old boss from a few years ago, at a different company! Without that, I doubt that I would have gotten it.

GasitMan, this is beating a dead horse but ..
I bought a new car when I had the cash, not because my salary was boosted.

The difference is clear to me, but perhaps not to you ? If I buy something it is after I consider my current worth, not my presumed future worth based on salary. Your presumption that the majority of people make decisions based on monthly cash flows (aka -- can the monthly payment be handled) to service debt is not only wrong, it is not even true except in western countries.

Car purchasing in China is an interesting read. GM has been trying for years to convince consumers to buy cars on debt with very little success.

I'm not really implying anything - I just don't wanna see anyone burned at the stake.

OT: I'm watching Office Space right now....."I don't really like my job anymore, so I'm gonna quit going". :D

God on ya mate, I knew you would get it!
    Well done.
So what you are saying is you got the job based on your past excelent performance? What is wrong with that? If you were no good back then you would still be without work now kiddo!!

    Thanks, Pat

This is a temporary job - it's slated to be just through January, but I plan to become so indispensable, that they will decide that they can't let me go! ;)
