Does your v make a beep when it gets to the last PIP and does the last bar blink when it gets to 20 or less miles to empty? When I have 25 or less miles left, my v does not make a warning beep nor does the last bar blink like the regular prius. Is this normal? Checked the manual but could not find anything about it.

Got the last bar to extinguish and orange low fuel light to illuminate with 20 miles range. Filled up at 4 miles range.

I usually see the low fuel light of I get within 11 miles of 'empty'. I actually have about 2 gallons at that point, but that suits me fine.

I had mine at 15 miles left but got no warning light. So I thought that was strange since I use my regular prius for work and makes a beep and the last bar flashes. I thought there was something wrong with the fuel gauge. So Jimbo, it has to get close to 10 miles to empty before the fuel warning light illuminates. No audible warning sound? I'll try to get to 10 miles to zero before refueling next time.

My fuel light comes on with a single beep and comes on at 1.8 gal remaining according to my scangauge. I have verified the scanguge againts actuall fillups and the scangauge seems accurate.

In many cars, you burn out the fuel pump running the gas tank dry because the fuel actually helps cool the pump which is inside the tank. Not an experiment I'd want to try.

That's why the warning goes off with from 1.5 to 2 gallons left in the tank.

So 0.0 on your ScanGauge does represent the real bottom of the tank on the 'v'?

On my Liftback, it does not. It gets stuck at 0.7 gallon, never reading lower. But if it did display lower, its 'zero' appears to be offset from the real empty point of the tank. I.e., when I run it very low, the ScanGauge FLV reading plus the actual refill amount add up to less than 11.9 gallons.

Despite the offset, I still find this a useful indicator.

    Maybe...
Definitely not something I want to experience for myself. But, it does appear to be accurate.

Correct. The regular prius will not have the orange gas pump icon when it gets to the last bar but you will hear an audible beep and the last fuel bar blinking.

the blinking fuel bar just doesn't catch your eye like a warning light.

An orange gas pump shaped icon lights up, but does not blink, to the left of E, at about 11 miles before Toyota's best guess of your range goes to 0.

Not in any new cars. You run out of fuel and you are fine. You add fuel and your car is no different. Now, if you do this on a regular basis, it can turn into an issue, but running out once isn't going to hurt anything. I think most people who are passionate about great gas mileage are all about testing limits, and like my Dad, will test the boundaries of the capacity of their tank at least once. :) I know that many argue the whole debris thing for the tank, but most people test their fuel tanks when the car is new, therefore the amount of debris in the tank is probably non-existent.

I would imagine most people learn enough after the first time they run out of fuel to not want to go through the process again. ;)

Excellent reply! It is amazing that people continue to regurgitate horror stories from the distant past.
