You got your plates in 10 days? Ok I'm calling my dealer, I'm PO'd!

Purchased my car over a month ago, still no plates.

It took me 40 days after purchase to get the title document, which includes the plate number, and an additional eight days to get the plates.

    I had a longer experience.
    03/08 Got Prius
03/09 Walked in FasTrak Center in SFO and got transponder
03/10 Mailed HOV app without plate number
04/14 Rejectd by DMV, saying no plate number (mumble: my fault)
04/18 Got plate and remailed app
04/27 Rejected by DMV again, saying not the right transponder receipt (mumble: why not pointing out what I missed in one time? and feel better by thinking that I will not meet DMV anyway as they must go to hell in future).
04/28 Mailed app the third time with the following note.
    Dear:
This is the other paper I got from FasTrak when I just bought my car and there was no plate number. The plate number is in the Title Certificate. This is the third time I send mail back and forth to DMV. It is a long and frustrated process to get this $8 sticker. Please don't reject me this time.
    God bless America.
    ~Sam, 04/28/2006
05/16 Cleared check (mumble: god bless me too and the note worked)
05/19 Received sticker #595111 (numble: why not as exciting as 05/16)

5/9/06: mailed DMV form and copy of FasTrack paperwork to DMV

    Finally got the sticker :)

    3/26 purchase Prius
3/29 went to SF to get the transponder
    3/31 mail out the application
4/10 application returned by DMV, no license number
5/02 receive the DMV reg info, a very long wait
    5/03 re-send the application
    5/15 check cleared
    5/25 sticker received, #595XX

The whole process took two months, and could be shorter had I got the license plate from the dealer earlier. Anyway, I'm still happy to get it.

    here is my timeline

    4/12 purchase Prius
4/14 express mail out the application
4/24 application returned by DMV, no license number
4/28 re-send the application w/ info from dealer
5/02 receive the DMV registration 5TR****
    5/08 receive plate
    5/15 check cleared
    5/25 sticker received, #594XX

The whole process took 6 weeks, and could be longer to get the license plate if w/o the dealer help. Thanks to Karen Bambauer at Rancho Santa Margareta. ([email protected])

    Timeline and question...

Wed 5/10 Came home from Dealer w/ car

Sat 5/13 Went to FasTrak place in SF and got transponder (3rd transponder in family--husband & son each now also have one in their respective guzzlers)

5/13 Mailed sticker app stuff to DMV, including FasTrak receipts but NOT plate # (even though I DO have plates for the car--I am transferring my disabled plates from my '91 Acura, but DMV, in its infinite wisdom, will not allow me to simply tell THEM the VIN to associate with the plates, but makes me wait for them to send me a set of plates and then go back to them to trade them in for the plates that are already in my possession...pardon the digression..)

Thur 5/24 No nothin' from DMV--not plate # (that I don't want anyway), not stickers, and not a return of my app for not having plate # (and, according to my online trawl of my bank account, the $8 check has not yet cleared).

Anybody have any ideas if I should be worried or not? I REALLY wanna take a road trip in the new baby, but, since I'll be driving 400 miles south to LA to see my parents & sibs, and the LA HOV lanes I recall seeing are all restricted ALL OF THE TIME, I don't want to do it until I get the stickers--although, with only about 150 miles on the car, I have already found that the gas consumption is lowest in bumper-to-bumper traffic, which definitely puts a different perspective on sitting in traffic...

    Update:

    3/24/06 Bought car
3/24/06 Went into FasTrak office in SF, exchanged transponder
    3/25/06 Mailed application

4/8/06 Received mail, postmarked on 4/4, from the DMV, saying:
"DMV has RESERVED your carpool lane stickers for you!
Please submit the item indicated by the checked boxes, in order to complete your application.
    - Vehicle License Number and Vehicle Identification Number
Mail all required item(s) in the envelope provided"

The $8 check was stamped with the DMV "For Deposit Only" stamp.
Application was stamped with the received date of 3/28/06.

5/5/06 Got plate number from local DMV counter. Mailed the app.
    5/17/06 Received plates.
    5/22/06 Check cashed.
    5/26/06 Received stickers 601xx.

    What an inefficient process...

    Here's my story:

April 10th: Decide to purchase car, but only want a red package #9, and for at or below MSRP. Also, I am in the midst of travelling in Louisiana.
April 12th: purchase car from Virginia. Discover I can't do wire transfers unless I'm in California. Send a cashier's check.
April 19th: Car is purchased, arrange for shipment through Dependable Auto Shippers.
April 20th: Car is picked up.
April 29th: Car arrives in Los Angeles terminal.
May 1st: Car is delivered to my home.
May 9th: I arrive back from my trip. Title is in my mailbox, don't know how long it took to arrive.
May 10th: I go to the DMV and turn in title paperwork, pay taxes, and get plates on the spot, then send off clean air sticker paperwork.
May 12th 6:49 am.: Office recieves clean air paperwork.
    May 26th: check clears.

    Waiting for stickers in mail.

For those considering buying out of state, if I had been able to wire transfer the money, I would have shaved off 9 days from the beginning to the end. In addition, if you purchase in a nearby state, you can just go pick it up yourself, and not worry about the transit time. (Which woulld shave another 10 days off). The real question is how long it will take to get your title, b/c I'm pretty sure you need it in order to get California plates.

Got my stickers last night, 32 days after I bought my car.

    My timeline

    4/28 Friday-Bought Car
5/2 Tuesday (+4 days) -Faxed Fastrak Application
5/6 Saturday (+8 days) -Fastrak Transponder arrived in mail
5/10 Wednesday (+12 days)-Picked up plates at dealership
5/11 Thursday (+13 days) -Mailed HOV application to DMV
5/18 Thursday (+20 days) -Title arrived in mail
5/30 Tuesday (+32 days) -Check cleared (Memorial Day weekend delay)
5/30 Tuesday (+32 days) -HOV stickers arrived, #604xx

The Dealership was very helpful in getting me my plates 12 days after buying my car. They waited for the checks to clear. I talked to the right person at the right time.
The date issued on the HOV certificate is 5/25/06.

forgot when exactly I mailed everything... but I do know...

    Check was cashed 5/25

Recieved Sticker and License Plate today 6/1

    #607xx

Based on the posts here, looks like they're going at about 100, per day.

At this rate, we have about 143 days left.... That's just under 5 months left of stickers

It has been said that if you mail in a cashiers check not a personal check that the stickers get here faster..
    Any comments?

Back off ~2-3 weeks for applications in the pipeline, and another ~2-4 weeks for DMV paperwork to be processed if you are buying a car (ok, less if your dealer dealer is really efficient and submits electronically).

Question on Buying a used Prius:

If car already has the stickers - what is the process.

Do I have to get new stickers of my own, or just transfer title and register it under my name?

    Thanks

Just transfer the title and registration. The stickers are bound to the car, not the owner.

    5/13 bought car.
5/13 mailed check to DMV for HOV stickers.
5/24 got plates (mailed from the dealer, not the DMV)
6/1 check cleared from DMV for HOV stickers.

There is also a certificate for those stickers that come from the DMV...something on the certificate says you must give it to CHP if they ask for it...so you may want to make sure you get that card, too. I assume it's so that if CHP thinks you've got fake stickers or something, the card is supposed to validate they are real -- the issue# is on the card and the stickers, presumably if they match you're for real.

Got my HOV stickers June 03 (clean air vehicle stickers). #60799

Took about 6 weeks. As adivsed in prior posts make sure you submit your registration and license number with the application.

Of course event though I had the diagram in front of me I put the large sticker in the wrong spot. I quickly peeled it off and put it on the correct spot. This left many specks of white glue on the bumper. Water and windex had little effect so I used rubbing alcohol to remove the glue. This did the trick quickly and did nothing to the paint job. I rinsed the alcohol off with copious amounts of water. FWIW if the stickers become useless in the future. B)

I put mine on the rear quarter windos, the lower rear half window and front bumber. Tried to get as much glas as possible to avoid damaging the paint on removal, or odd fading. Had the stickers since they came out and put about 30,000 miles on the car, no problems. And I've even driven by some CHiPies looking for HOV scofflaws
