The Audi A8: the World's First Production Car to Achieve Level 3 Autonomy

Level 3 means the driver needn’t supervise things at all, so long as the car stays within guidelines. Here that involves driving no faster than 60 kilometers per hour (37 mph), which is why Audi calls the feature AI Traffic Jam Pilot.

    I am.

"To be sure, the A8 also monitors the driver, even while the traffic jam persists, and continues to do so as the speed edges up over the limit. If the driver falls asleep, it’ll wake him up; if it can’t get his attention, it will stop the car.......

Most notable of all, there’s lidar—the first ever offered on a production car. "

great !!! hey Audi - welcom to the 21st century
    ;)
Tesla has been doing this already for years now, only they aren't a subsidiary of a cheat scandal company - which makes every thing they say here on in, highly suspect - for at lest as many years as they were cheating.
Then there's the A8's EPA ... ballpark, around 18/19 mpg blended city/highway. Woo hoo !! No wonder VW needs to build electric ... just so they won't have to buy credits, to offset their crappy CAFE numbers.

so if the car can't get the drivers attention, it will stop the car with traffic barreling down on it at 80 mph?

Why would it do that? Wouldn't it make more sense for the computer to pull over and then stop?

Level 3 autonomy is (or isn't) allowed by state & federal regulations. For now? and for who knows, if ever? It's a no go. Yes, the 3 equipment is installed on AP2 Teslas, but may never be allowed by regulatory agencies. Their videos showing it off are only for demonstration / advertising. So the fact Teslas got it, or that another car builder may also install the equipment some day - regulators may or may not ever legalize level 3 driving. So it's still a moot point.

no, idea, just paraphrasing the audi quote. didn't say anything about pulling over to a safe place, just said it would stop the vehicle.

I have no idea why audi wants to do this. My guess is they will only sell it as level 3 in countries with low liability penalties. I'm glad they are putting all that expensive hardware in a saleable vehicle, and we can see if it works. I don't know why they would tell drivers that they can trust the car so early in its development cycle.
