You are referring it as Crossover Utility Vechile, which is true that it is a broad term. There is also a term of CUV called Cute Utility Vehicle (I know, stupid people used the same letters to name something similar), that I am referring to. The Cute UV is named for smaller class of SUV. This name came about when the Rav4 and CR-V was toy size.... ie. Cute.

IMHO a lot of these categories don't make much sense, because the consumer demands they are trying to meet don't make much sense ;)

It is coming back for vehicles like the Chevy Trax and the Fiat based Jeep. Compact SUVs like the original ones the CUV was coined for. Small cars tended to get the cute label, so it just spread to small SUVs. The NX wouldn't be a CuteUV. It is a little bigger than the current, bloated Rav4.

Most Crossovers are car-like SUVs or SUV-like wagons; a tall wagon. SUVs have picked up a negative image in circles. Circles that have the money for the big vehicle. The term wagon has been out of favor for some time. It might come back, but the marketing departments couldn't risk it. Thus Crossover.

Crossover - drives like a car, looks like a SUV.
Cute-utes - compact SUVs (RAV4, CR-V, Forester.. particularly the first generation of each one)

The NX would fall into an increasingly popular luxury compact SUV, competing with the likes of the RDX, X3, GLK, Q5, EX/QX50 etc. It's targeted at those who want a luxury (or near luxury) SUV but don't want to drive something as large as an X5/M-Class/FX/QX60/MDX etc.

A new segment is starting to emerge - the subcompact SUV (super cute utes? LOL) - Trax/Encore and HR-V/Vetel
