Long Term Storage

    I have had experience storing our two 2010 Prius' for up to seven months at a time. The only issue was a failure of the 12-volt battery even though it was on a battery maintainer for the entire storage. The drive battery always appears to be at the upper end of the charge scale when the engines are started and I've had no issues with either vehicle due to long term storage. One vehicle is stored in Florida in the summer and the other vehicle is stored Kentucky in the winter. Mileage on each vehicle is 80,000 and 30,000.

    Our friends who also have a 2010 Prius with about 45,000 will need to store their Prius for 20 months in Florida.

    What are some of the options they have to insure that their drive battery does not discharge? It is possible for someone to start the engine every now and then. But driving it is not an option because there is no insurance on the vehicle when it is stored.

    For best results, disconnect the 12v when storage begins. Then when you're ready to take it out of storage, charge up the 12v and use a hybrid automotive Prolong system to fully charge and balance the Hybrid drive battery. And yes these chargers are a bit expensive, but if you find other Prius owners in your neighborhood to chip in on it you can bring costs down real quick.

    The problem with NiMH drive battery is it's prone to self discharge and though some have gone into storage for a year or longer without issue, if you want to eliminate all risks and extend the lifespan of your hybrid battery as much as possible, buy a charging system from: Prolong Battery Systems | Hybrid Automotive California, USA
