A little more than a week ago, the hybrid battery on my 2006 Prius (only 55000 miles) failed. I had the car towed to my Toyota dealer, who informed me the next day that these batteries were back-ordered (supposedly around 300 back-ordered) and that it would take 6 weeks to get a new battery. This just seems unreasonable to me. I understand that dealers are not going to have spare hybrid batteries stacked up like spark plugs, but six weeks to get a vital part for a car? Quite frankly, with all the Prius's on the road, 300 needing batteries doesn't seem all that high.

I was wondering what kind of waits other people have experienced for hybrid batteries. Up to now, I have really liked my Prius, but if this is the norm for parts like the hybrid battery, I will probably never buy another one. The dealer did supply a rental car, so I am happy about that.

55000 miles? wow, that's early. But you have two of the four major risk factors: age, terrain.

Because it failed under warranty, and the batteries are on backorder, you are entitled to a free loaner car. Start by asking your service advisor, then escalate to Toyota Customer Care if denied.

It didn't fail under warranty. The warranty expired a few years ago.

But you are looking at a 6 year old post. It was under warranty at that time.(y)

You're correct. My mistake for missing that.

In 2015 our HV battery went out while still under warranty on our previous Prius at 9+ years and 125k miles. Crown Toyota replaced it in one day.
