    Hello,
My prius blew a head gasket @ 120,000 miles with no lights, low coolant, or warning. Looking to swap in a newer engine with less miles but I an having a hard time finding a mechanic willing to do it The dealer will do it for an insane sum of money ($3500+).

Anyone recommend me a mechanic in California, preferably close to the Central Coast but I'm willing to drive anywhere. Need this done very soon.

    Thanks!

What are the symptoms then? Did you do compression or leak-down testing?

What are you willing to pay?
What do you think is a fair price?
    $2700?

Are these $'s with/without the donor engine cost? Would "without" be better, just break out the labour cost, since the age/condition of the new engine can vary? I'm thinking it could be anywhere between a low mileage engine pulled from a wreck (getting increasingly rare?), to a medium mileage engine that's been rebuilt, to a dubious mileage engine that's more-or-less a crap shoot?

Then there's 4th gen engines, which can be put in, with a few mods:

(It's going into a Prius v, but the principles are basically the same.)

What kind of engine was the dealership proposing, for $3500? The dealership premium may have benefits. Was it a dealership that made the diagnosis?
