Looking for information on 2004 Prius

    Hi all, totalled my car and thought about getting a 2004 Prius I've found, it got 140k miles, is there any way to know the health of the HV batery

    Yes, but it requires OEM software (Techstream).

    There are however, a number of DIY tests that can be performed to gauge, not measure, the HV battery capacity. One particularly useful one involves running the car to fully charged (Green bars on the battery meter) and then seeing how far it will drive on the electric motors alone at like 25 MPH. You need a LIGHT touch on the accelerator and a relatively flat road for this.

    Thanks bisco, like any used car buy, problem can happen, just hope to get 2-3 years (+/-30000miles) of reliability. Might try the test that 05PreeUs says. Used to have some 2004 where I used to work and they were pretty reliable.

    generally speaking, they are very reliable. my neighbor has my 2004, 150,000 miles, no repairs. all the best!(y)

    I did the math, on the fuel savings alone v Toyota Camry, we can *afford* to replace the HV battery with a NEW OEM one every four years and still be money ahead.
