Looks like we're going to need more sunscreen

A key part of the Earth’s ozone layer is failing to heal — and scientists don’t know why

I'll start saving up for window tinting...

I see people occasionally walking in our area with umbrellas in full sun; looks like it may become a more common occurrence!

Is it possible that some of the lower altitude ozone comes from industrial/car pollution which is being reduced due to smog controls?
What we need is a good sized volcanic eruption!

    VW diesels and their ilk?

I recently needed to dispose of some used brake cleaner. Looked up for advice, and the best I found was to mix it with some kitty litter in a shallow tray, let it evaporate. Which I did.

I think the best bet for the individual, is just try to limit your use, of solvents, in particular aerosol propellant, use water-based paints, that sort of thing.

That's really common in Japan, sunscreen is expensive compared to UV-blocking parasols.

The window tint makes a HUGE difference in keeping the car comfortable on sunny days, plus it protects the interior from sun damage, and tends to hide interior contents from would-be thieves.

Please don't read this as racist, but the only people I see sporting umbrellas in sunny weather around here are oriental ladies. Always. And, it seems a very sensible idea.

    Oh, recall this:

Love that movie. Recognized the screenshot immediately. I never wore a hat in my younger days. I had a natural hat. Hair. Not any more. I won't carry an umbrella, but I've taken up hats. Not baseball caps. They don't cover the ear or the neck. We need to get back to what worked in the old days. Fedoras. Cowboy hats etc.

If you can't use the sun, at least take vitamin D3 as a supplement. A typical blood level of vitamin D is 20 ng/ml (USA units), while an optimal level is at least 60 ng/ml. According to Serum Level vs Intake - GrassrootsHealth , someone with such a level would have to supplement 10,000 IU per day to reach 60 ng/ml.

Note that vitamin D is only one of several photoproducts of sun exposure. Cholesterol sulfate is another less researched product. Burning is obviously bad, but total avoidance is also a problem.

I was under the impression that Prii came with UV-blocking glass.

I think only on 2 ECO and higher trims. It was specifically mentioned as a feature for the 2 ECO.
Also I have not heard of the Gen 4 windshield breakage issue affecting trim Two. Our trim two already had one situation where we were surprised the windshield did not break.

Europe banned CFCs as aerosol propellants years ago.

I'm pretty sure that glass blocks at least part of the UV radiation; it's infrared that gets through. Tinted glass, depending on the product used, reduces both to varying degrees.
    Note:
Try using "Sun Hazards and Your Car" in search engine. The link I copied didn't work!

Plain glass will block a fair amount of UV, and windshields likely block more to reduce UV damage to interior materials. My Transition lenses don't darken in the car or by a window.

I think you are thinking of IR filtering glass on the Prius. This is what heats up the interior, and reducing it reduces the cooling load for the A/C.

It gets pretty hot in the summer here

and whatever's on the windows doesn't do that much. No trees in the parking lot at the job... Perhaps a parasol for the Prius?

G'day (from the skin-cancer capital of the world (country, that is)),

No one has mentioned that UV is a great cause of cataracts (in the lenses of our eyes, nothing to do with rivers and streams).

So as well as buying better grades of sun-screen cream or lotion, make sure you buy better performance sun-glasses (check the UV-rating, not the design) and wear them if out in the 'midday sun', like those mad dogs and Englishmen noted by Noel Coward.

If you're in your car, and drive with the windows up (e.g. not hanging an unsleeved arm out a window like maccho-Melanoma-Man), the absorbance of the window glass is good enough to stop the UV (as the owner of the photochromic glasses reported earlier in this thread).

So no sun-tan and no cataracts through window glass of regular thickness and composition (it's the ferric ion in the glass that is 'our friend' absorbing the UV).

When out and about I've used a Columbia Hat like this for about 10 years. It's been a great one. I picked it up back then on sale at REI.

Columbia Gravel Watch Cap160 Misc Whiteone - at Stage Stores

For dirtier jobs like yardwork I picked up a camo Sierra hat that's styled like the Columbia but a little thicker. It's cotton and easy to throw in the washer. That one I picked up for $3 at a thrift shop.

Not sure about anyone else here, but my optometrist of many years told me that all high-index plastic prescription lenses have UV protection built in.

He also advised me that almost all lenses are made by the same couple of companies, you don't need to spend more for fancy-schmancy brand names.
