Wow, 9 degrees for a high, sounds like swimming weather, lol.
Sorry to hear about extreme temps.EV average is actually not bad with those low temps.

My EV estimate was down to 8.9mi at one point when we had a single digit day followed by a 0 deg morning and and another single digit day after that. Once the temps went up to the teens- the EV range went back up to 9.1mi where it pretty much stays for most of the winter.

I really wish I had known beforehand that this was going to happen... not that it would have stopped me from buying the PIP. As a matter of fact it's helped me temper my expectations for other EV vehicles.

Talked to a coworker who has a Ford C-Max Energi and he reports his estimated range is down to 12. So everybody is feeling your pain.

    Wow, that's some reduction!
My PIP gives me 11.2 EV miles in summer, 9.1 EV miles in winter- a 19% reduction.
The C-Max Energi supposedly gives 20 EV miles in summer- so 12 EV miles in winter is a huge 40% reduction
I'd be pretty disappointed in a 40% range reduction if I was a Ford owner!

Tell me about it. Mine drops from 11.6 to 9.6 in the winter (9.8 if I fire up the wood stove in the garage). And his car is garaged.

:)Hard to adjust to winter EV mileage after approximately nine months of spring - summer - fall weather. I've learned to appreciate any EV mileage, but less is painful to endure.

IMO This is a major hurdle that needs to be overcome. If my weekly commute is 300 miles and I buy a EV that claims 300 range- I'm going to be really pissed when I only get 180 (a 40% drop) EV miles due to cold weather.

If the masses were to buy-in to EV's and they find a 40% winter time drop in EV range without being told/warned (and possibly having to sign off acknowledging they're aware of it) in advance by the car maker- I imagine it would be class action time. Right now they get away with it because the EV miles in cars like the PIP are so paltry to begin with that a 2-4 mile range drop isn't a big deal, but when you start talking 100+ mi range drop- that's a major issue.

maybe when the batteries are cheaper, they can put more in to keep them climate controlled after charging. that should help keep range up.

I'd be interested to hear from Zythryn. I think he is a Tesla owner in Minneapolis. Would love to hear how his winter estimates differ from his summer ones.

Especially if the Tesla lives outside like some of our PIP's....

I would guess it lives in a nice warm garage and maybe only gets out on really nice days!:)

    I would guess the same!

It seems like we have to re-learn how to evaluate things on EV's properly- it's not the same as regular ICE vehicles.
When the manufacturer says "our EV gets 25 miles on a charge" (I'm taking to you Ford!) we need to ask: At what temperature, what vehicle speed, roadway grade, headwind, traffic conditions, with heat or AC on, passenger load, etc...

"mine drops from 17 to 12 and is garaged. but at 17, i can get 17-18. at 12, i can still get 14."

for the first time yesterday I saw firsthand what a difference garaging makes
I've almost never even in this cold Boston winter had ICE kick in as I left the driveway - this despite driving my wife to the train at 5:40am when its been single digits. Fri night I mistakenly left the garage door open, it was 7 degrees and ICE kicked in right away. Wasn't a 104 mile time to kick in deal either as that happened a day prior.
Normal seems to be high 30's in my garage.

So then I'm on my way to Boston, stopped for coffee halfway where I can charge for free at WholeFoods. Charged fully, am on my way and yup ICE kicked in again despite temps warming up to 18. More of an uphill return trip and I had it kick in for a 3rd time so not a good day in that regard !
PiP is almost a year old now and its the first time I've had ICE kick in more than once in a day

Wow! Cool no wonder your EV % ratio is so good.

well it was better until winter - I think due to my daily driving / charging routine but yeah now I'm guessing this helped!
I'm curious - what's the temp of yours when you leave your garage into that frigid Wisconsin air ?
