I think in this case "pips" refer to the yellow segments of the fuel gauge.

Finger's width from the speedometer display, big, bright and colourful, love it. And the little gas tank symbol lights up when you're getting low?

With all due respect, that's more than enough for anyone to be aware of where they stand with regards to hydrocarbon fuel level status. Nobody should be driving any vehicle without having adopted a keen attitude towards regularly scanning the dashboard and noting readouts before driving off, and at least every 10 minutes while out cruising. It only seems......LOGICAL.

My last car, a Mazda MX-3 1.6 litre DOHC engined Coupe had the great dysfunction of lacking a warning light for when petrol was running low.

To be fair, it DID have a fairly accurate fuel gauge, the dial which would literally drop below the bottom gauge mark long BEFORE the fuel would run out (never happened to me), but you really had to be astoundingly incompetent to actually run out of fuel while driving that car.

This was a cute little 2 + 2 coupe that looked a million dollars from the outside, but had a minimalist dashboard inside, that could lull you to sleep without even trying! So, in the absence of cute flashing lights or a pseudo-holographic dashboard display (I'm looking at you, Honda Civic that looks like a UFO from Area 51....), you were invariably forced to regularly peruse the different dial read outs in the dashboard to avoid falling asleep......or, for the more mechanically inclined, to watch your speed, while simultaneously endeavouring to convince yourself all was well, and the engine wasn't going to explode due to all the engine coolant going south or some other similarly random clichéd catastrophe.

Did I mention that I never did run out of fuel?

    Helpful Hint of The Day:
When The Low Fuel "Comes On"?
    That IS The alert.
    F represents Full.
    E represents Empty.

If you can't figure that out without the aide of beeps? Seek Help Immediately.

My alert is when the gauge gets below half, lol. Secondly for safety, a bit much I'd acknowledge, but I'm still just filling up every 3~4 weeks. But first and foremost: to make dang sure I'm the one filling up, since I'm logging tanks.

But mon ami, the Citroen, she eez a reel automobile, you cannot expect ze peasant mobiles to behave ze same way!!

I really think you need to have your driver and/or valet be more attentive to their jobs, including the responsible monitoring of your Prius Prime's fuel level. This would do away with the silly need for a "beep" or a light! Of course, good help is SO hard to find these days!

Why did the talking cars never catch on ?
I remember in the 80s there were cars with voice alerts, the voice would actually speak the words, "low fuel" or "door open, door open, door open" in an annoying voice.
In the Prius it could say, "Whoa buddy watch that lane marker" for LKA or "Brake, brake, brake, deploying airbags" for EBA etc.
