    why wouldn't it be on?

it counts miles.... he's probably at or reaching the 5K mark on his odo.. yes.. at 4500 it'll start warning ya... and at 5000. it'll stay on.

I was just asking to see if he had done something else that may have triggered it instead. Had to ask to be sure it was a normal sequence he was seeing for it to be on.

it only counts miles... there wouldn't be any other reason why it would turn on.

yes.. it's nothing more than a mileage counter.

on a few other cars I've owned, the maintenance minder was triggered by a variety of factors other than just miles. in all honesty, I hated that they did that. are all toyotas triggered strictly on miles alone? I know my FIT varies as well as a few BMWs.

That's quite a bit in such a short time.

    Maybe you're almost a version of 2 fas 4 u. He traded in his 09 Prius w/465K miles (!!!) for a '12 Prius v.

Is there actually any maintenance required at that point? The only thing I have been hearing, for the most part, is oil at 10,000 or 12 months...

Tire rotation and fluid check is all that's "required" @ 5K.

On the 2012 Honda's there are a number of factors which indicate maintenance is due, bring us to a 9k oil change. With most sources recommend tire rotations at 5k it makes sense to have maintenance schedules based on 5k increments. We have this problem with our work vehicles, shop will do free rotate and balance every 5k but we only need oil changes every 8-9k, they refused a early wear warranty because we were only rotate and balancing them every 8-9k not 5k per their warranty docs. I would probably rather the 5k increments. The Honda iMID gets really annoying after you get the maintenance minder down to 15%. You have to clear it every time you start the car.

Dealer set me up with a "1st service" appointment...oil change, tire rotation yadda, yadda, yadda for 5000 miles when he delivered the car.
Back in the day we always did an early oil change on a new engine to make sure that we got all the little metal pieces left over from engine manufacture, which we hoped were trapped in the filter and changing early decreased the possibility that the metal filings would get back into the engine. After the 5K change I go back to the recommended interval.

The 5,000 mile maintenance message comes on at every startup after a certain point; simply change the display. I took mine in yesterday for first maintenance; I was told that the tires needed to be rotated (free under warranty). The first oil change isn't for another 5,000 miles. :)

uhh... simply changing the display.. doesn't reset the maintenance data... and it'll come up every single time you start up the car still.. that's not what you want..

certain point? it'll say maintenance required soon.. at 4500..
then change to maintenance required a 5000.

just read page 349.. it'll tell you know to reset the maintenance data.. you need to do it for it to do what it's supposed to do... remind you every 5K miles to do maintenance..

They do a tire rotation at 5000, and a few other things. I just had my 5000 mile service this morning.

While the boot screen appears when you turn on your car, press the TRIP button 3 times and hold it down on the third press. 55555, 44444, 33333, 22222, 11111 will appear and progress down to 00000. When the 00000 goes out and the screens return to normal you may let up on the TRIP button.

At 4500 miles the reminder begins at the startup of the car. You can choose to either press DISPLAY once to get back to your normal screens, reset it entirely to make it go away (you may reset at the oil change and/or tire rotation), or ignore it/turn off your screens.

On the C, it only goes by 5k mile intervals. That is all. No other parameters are present.
