First tank: 531 miles @ 60.2 MPG on my normal commute. Temps were moderate and I needed almost no AC. This would have been a 700 mile tank but I filled up with two bars left to get ready for a drive to CO.

Second and third tanks: Drove to CO yesterday. The trip was 868 miles and we did it in 14 hours including stops. We got there on 21.5 gallons or right around 40 MPG. The net climb was 5000 feet in elevation. The real killer was that we set the cruise control at 76 mph for 650 miles and 81 for 218 miles. The car was fully loaded with around 700 lbs of people and gear.

Hey all, I just became part of the family. I'm the proud owner of a 2003 with 60K on it. I absolutely love the car, but after 2 tanks I'm only getting about 37MPG. Ray, what are you feeding your baby, because I want some of that! :)

I plan on changing the dirty air filter and replace the plugs with some Denso's I just got, are there any other tricks you guys are using??

My wife is the main driver of the car and she is still learning how to drive for the best MPG's, any tips?

I'm going to do some more searching on the site for tips and tricks, but just wondering if you MPG masters out there are doing anything special to get the MPGs.

    Thanks,
    Greg

First half of March on one tank.

    Tank Miles: 364.6
    Total Miles: 4905
    Tank MPG: 43.6
    Lifetime MPG: 43.87
    Avg Temp: 30s
    Price of Tank: $17.87
    Price per Gal: $2.14

For the first time yesterday, I noticed a bar on the Consumption screen with a higher level of "green cars" than the blue bar, which was very low. It had something to do with standing still in the car wash while the machine operated, then moving a bit for good mileage all in the 5 minutes.

A week of no rain really improves my fuel effency. That and much warmer weather (we're hitting 70s all week).

I tried to keep it under 65 MPH. I know I went as high as 67 once :?
I don't understand why my displayed and calculated mileage is so different. Any ideas?

54.4 mpg on the current tank, with only 2k miles on the odo. I'm happy with that, but will continue trying to squeeze a bit more out of her, just for fun.. I'm driving like a stereotypical granny, mostly on the highway.

I note that the first five minutes' mileage always stinks(25-30 mpg)--unless the car has already warmed up.

omg......really? You must keep a couple tank tops right next to your Parka and mittens!
I envision you living on a snow-capped mountain (in TX....rofl) and then your driveway leads to Acapulco by the beach!

    Question about mileage stats....
I don't have my P* yet........but when I get it and want to start keeping "logs".......is this easily done with the onboard PC or do you guys/gals actually write all this down in a notebook?

    TIA

I jot my figures down in my PDA, and keep a spreasheet on the PC.

Actually, the wide temparature swings are due to being up very early in the morning in a rural area, and then driving into the metromess, where I get to deal with the urban heat island effect, where it is not unusual to watch the thermometer rise 10 degrees between where I live, and where I work. We can get some good temperature extremes this time of year as well. We had a late season freeze last week, and then 80 degree temps a couple of days later. It was 41 degrees and raining when I got up this morning. The local news is calling for 79 degrees by Tuesday. It'll be stifling hot and humid all too soon.

New P* silver Pkg# 2 driven out of dealership last night, 28th March. Driver is Presbyterian Pastor. Distance 5.4 miles, round trip, to the church and back. First trip in one day is logged Personal. For IRS, every business jog has to be logged, so trip meter gets reset each day or each complete trip and details logged. Each log sheet is for one month and is totalled and turned in for re-imbursement (twelve per year). Short trip to and from the church likely to produce lousy fuel efficiency but other suburban area trips should fare better. This will be the first day of use.

The Prius has two trip meters plus the one in the MFD for a total of three. That should satisfy your needs to log your business miles as well as enable you to accurately calculate your mileage.

I got my 05 Prius in early December 2004, was getting 46 - 48MPG throughtout the Illinois winter.

It came nicely together now: The mileage hit 10,000 and the temperature hit 70's, and I got my first 53MPG on tank! Mostly rural roads, but I don't exactly drive like grannny - I'm not afraid to step at that throttle when needed.

    Wow! This car rocks!

    Notes from my PDA/phone.

Second half of March on a second tank.

    Tank Miles: 363.9
    Total Miles: 5269
    Tank MPG: 49.2
    Lifetime MPG: 44.2
    Avg Temp: 40s
Price of Tank: $16.50 [edit: corrected net price w/o car wash]
    Price per Gal: $2.22

We are using heat/AC much less now. My wife has caught on to achieving better mileage on her work trips and has several 5-minute periods of "99 mpg." Recently we showed the Prius to friends who highly value safety and quality in their car. The Prius moved to the head of their list for a "next car."
